MAUNDY SERVICE.
KING AND QUEEN TO ATTEND.
British Official Wireless (Received March 23, 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, March 22. The King and Queen will attend the Royal Maundy service at Westminster Abbey on Thursday, when, in accordance with an old custom, Maundy pennies will be distributed. This will be the first occasion a reigning sovereign has attended the service for a great number of years. The Maundy office originally consisted of washing the feet of twelve poor old men by the King to commerorate the washing of the Apostles’ feet. The last English king to carry out this duty was James 11. Since his day gifts of Maundy money have been distributed on behalf of the King to aged, infirm and poor, of as many men and as many women as there were years of the King’s age. Sixty-seven this year will receive Maundy money, each to be given 67 pence.
