Charles Chapman, against Lords Rosebery, Ellersmere and Harewood, stewards of the Jockey Club, and Weatherly and Sons (publishers of the racing calendar) and proprietors of “The Times" for libel, in publishing the stewards’ decision warning off Chapman from Newmarket and disqualifying the horse. Evidence was given that plaintiff had offered a £SOO reward, and employed a private detective to discover the doper, but failed. The jury found that the words meant that Chapman was a party to the doping, and returned a verdict granting £13,000 damages against the stewards and Weatherlys, and a further £3OOO against all the defendants Stay of execution was granted.
