FIRES.

BOARDINGHOUSE GUTTED. By Telegraph -Pres? Association HASTINGS, February 9. A fire which broke out shortly before 3 o’clock this morning completely gutted the upper storey and almost the whole of the lower floor of the Excelsior Boarding House. Hastings, occupied by Mrs Ethel Cook and owned by Mr George Hartshorn, Wellington. The building is situated in King Street North. The guests numbered 53, some eight of whom were sleeping in tents. The noise of the flames woke the proprietress, and she was able to awaken the men. All were working men, who lost all their effects.

The rooms of the upper storey contained, in some instances, four men. Others were sleeping in the passages, and it is a miracle that none were caught in the flames, which spread with tremendous rapidity.
