AMERICA’S HUNGRY MULTITUDE.

REJECTION OF FREE WHEAT PROPOSAL.

United Prees Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright (Received February 9, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 8. The Agricultural Committee of the House of Representatives rejected the Senate Bill to authorise the distribution of 40,000,000 bushels of wheat through charitable institutions immediately. Big Demand For Relief. Mr Green declared that it would be a foregone conclusion that a conference of the national and international officers of the various Labour Unions meeting on Tuesday here, would appeal to Congress to appropriate an adequate sum on Monday, to provide a minimum amount of relief required by millions of working men and dependents, who are hungry.

Mr Green asserted that direct Federal relief, amounting practically to the dole, was necessary, since the local relief organisations were breaking down under the continued strain, and State funds are being exhausted by constant demands for aid.
