MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
TIMARU—JANUARY 28, 1932. (Before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker. S.M.) Riding Without Light. Murray Askin, who did not appear, was charged with riding a motor cycle at Pleasant Point at night without a light. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs 12/-. Case Adjourned. The charge preferred against Raymond Quinn was that of failing to pay an instalment of the unemployment levy. Constable Hogg said that he had interviewed defendant, who admitted that he had not paid an instalment. Mr G. McKessar. Unemployment Certifying Officer, stated that defendant interviewed him and said that he had no reason to offer for not having paid the levy on due date. He (Mr McKessar), had made inquiries regarding the amounts paid by defendant, but could not secure the information in time for the hearing. The Magistrate said that under the circumstances he would adjourn the case. In the meantime information could be secured as to whether defendant had paid the levies and the penalties imposed for late payment. Taxi-Driver Fined. Patrick Henwood was charged with driving a car in Arthur Street at a speed dangerous to the public. The Borough Inspector (Mr C. Newcome), said that defendant had driven round the gasworks corner at 35 miles an hour. Deefndant had had previous warnings, but had ignored them. The Magistrate: “He is a taxi-driver, is he not?” The Inspector: “Yes.” The Magistrate: “A good driver?” The Inspector: “Yes. There was no traffic about at the time, otherwise the consequences might have been serious.” The Magistrate: “He will be fined £1 and costs 10/-. Perhaps that will be a warning to him.”
