SUPERINTENDENT RETIRING. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 26. The retirement is announced of Mr W. W. Bird, Superintendent of Native and Island Education. During thirty years’ service with the Education Department, Mr Bird travelled extensively, his district at times including the area from Cape Maria Van Diemen to Stewart Island, and embracing the Chatham Islands, Cook Islands, and Samoa. In 1913 he drew up the first scheme of education for the Cook Islands. In 1920 he accompanied a Parliamentary party to Samoa and drew up a scheme of education for Samoa. He devoted much time to the study of the Maori language, and passed the examination for first-grade license as an interpreter.
