NEWS AND NOTES.

A cable message from Sydney reports that Anniversary Day holiday was favoured with fine weather. The annual regatta provided a colourful harbour scene, with the Orient liner Oronsay as flagship. A good breeze from the south-east was most helpful to the yachtsmen. The other outstanding attraction was the races at Rand wick. School outfits for boys or girls are specially advertised in the wanted columns by Morisons Ltd., 266 Stafford Street, North, at sale prices. These for boy or girl should be wonderful value, call and inspect them. Officials of the Fairfield picnic which went to Timaru on Saturday were unable to bring about an alteration of the Timaru Borough Council’s decision not to supply free hot water and milk to members of the party (says the “Ashburton Guardian”). Hitherto, it has been the custom of the Council to provide these things free, but it was pointed out on Saturday by the Mayor that the Council last year paid £B7 for hot water and milk for picnic parties and it found it was unable to continue to do so. Keeping up the supply of water in Ashburton races has caused some anxiety to the county engineer of late. The period over the last several months has been exceptionally dry, and sources of supply have had to be closely watched. The drop in the level of the north branch of the Ashburton River entailed the taking of a fresh supply from the south branch. So far the races have been kept going, but only as a result of careful scheming on the part of the engineer. The greatest trouble has been that at the Hinds Gorge, where there are no means of augmenting the supply, which has dropped to a very low level.

As a result of work which is being done by six men in an unemployed camp at Pudding Hill, the supply of water for the Methven township highpressure system has been assured at a time when a shortage was likely. Seepage from the hills had formed a swamp and the race leading to the supply had become more or less blocked. By a system of drainage cuts outlined by the county engineer the supply has been increased two to three times its original flow and it seems likely that the work will be a valuable auxiliary to other races. There have been men working on and off at this for some time, but it was not satisfactory because of the interrupted nature of the work. Now, however, six men are in camp there, this being their second week. The work will probably be finished in another week or a little more.
