POWER RATES.

- REPORT BY ENGINEER. NEW RATE ADOPTED. A report dealing with general power rates was submitted to last night'» meeting of the Timaru Borough Council by the Electrical Engineer (Mr A. E. Watkins), as follows: — “Rate ‘G’:—For consumers with installation power factor of 90 per cent, lag. minimum charge,4 /- per month per h.p. of connected load A.C. Day Rates—7.3o a.m. to 9.30 p.m., first 225 units per month, 2*d; second 225 units per month, 2d; balance, 15d. Night rate, hours 9.30 p.m. to 7.30 a.m., .6d. per unit for all units. The above rates are subject to a discount of 10 per cent, for payment of account within fourteen days. Consumers’ attention is drawn to the following by-law. Section 1, No. 4. ‘Power Factor.—ln all cases where the power factor of a consumer’s load is less than 90 per cent., the Corporation reserves the right to request the consumer to improve the power factor up to 90 per cent., or alternatively the Corporation may increase the supply rate in the ratio of 90 to the consumer’s power factor per cent., i.e., if the power is 70 per cent., the change may be based on 90/70 or 1.29 times the recorded maximum demand.’ Where it is found that the consumer’s power factor is not 90 per cent., the Department reserves the right to charge the following alternative rate—4o/- per K.V.A. demand per quarter, plus .6d. per cent., less 10 per cent, for payment of account within 14 days. Special rate applicable to flour mills and factories with synchronous motors installed, 35/- per K.V.A. per quarter plus .6d. per unit. If mills desire to work between the hours of 9.30 p.m. and 7.30 a.m. the unit rate only, i.e., .6d. per unit will be charged between these hours, but the department must be notified seven days prior to the commencement of the work, and the full quarter must be worked at the one rate, quarterly periods start: January, April, July and October. An extension of the night rate hours during the summer quarter commencing October and January can be obtained by applying to the Department. The above special rates are subject to a discount of 10 per cent, for payment of account within fourteen days. All demands will be measured by thermal type K.V.A. demand meters.” The Electricity Committee reported as follows:—“Schedule of power rates. —The engineer submitted a draft of Rate G. to carry out the decision of the Council in regard to charges paid by power users. This rate is recommended for approval, to be put into operation as from April Ist, 1932(” The report was adopted. -
