Williamson and W. Smith; secretary, Mr K. H. Fraser. Early on Saturday morning every- | hing appeared to be set fair for the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meet- J ng, but a raging nor’-wester, bringing i ! «>. mild heat wave in its tra'.i. lashed j !'he district later, and considerably re- I i stricted the attendance. The track was j | fast, but. the wind affected times to a ; •'rcat extent. Fields were large j throughout the day, but the racing was \ : nterfered with by the wind, which I raised clouds of dust during the running, and in addition severely tested i the stamina of the horses. The principal event, the President’s Handicap, produced the most exciting race of the day. Hostess, Nimble Direct, and Tarndale going under the wire in a finish in which all three drivers probably hoped they had won. The first two horses broke on the post, and Tarndale would have been in front with a few yards further to go. Black Lion accounted for the Pareora Handicap, but did not get the stake until after a lengthy and resultless inquiry, which cost the Club a good deal of money i owing to holding up the investments, and helped to make the last race 45 minutes late in starting. The totalisator turnover for the day was £9284, against £10,720 last January. The total was restricted by a hold-up of the money on the seventh race, but another factor was a run of big dividends. Only two winners returned less than £6; three paid over £l4. and a | fourth over a third of a century. There | were a couple of accidents. Directum. ; Midnight Sun and Auspicious losing j their drivers in the second race, and ! Morrison and Royal Chenault suffering a similar misfortune in the final event, but none of the reinsmen was injured. : A smash was narrowly averted in the ! big race owing to a driver cutting in too sharply at the foot of the straight. A Promising Novice. Lee Boy 354. Gay Paree 269, Marvin Guy 210 and Bosun 198 were the popular picks for the Claremont Handicap, but all made fatal mistakes on the trip. Tanepai led out from Germanicus and Homeleigh Girl, but the last-named broke early, and leaving the straight the order was Tanepai, Germanicus. | Benny Nelson Merrijigs and Gay Pares. Bonny Nelson broke on the bend, and Tanepai and Germanicus led up the back ten lengths clear of Merrijigs, with Marvin Guy a good way back. Tanepai commenced the last lap three lengths ahead of Germanicus, with Merrijigs ten lengths away, followed by j Gay Paree and Marvin Guy at intervals. Marvin Guy left his feet on the eastern bend, and Gay Paree broke when trotting fast into third place half a mile from home. This left Tanepai and Germanicus a long way in front of Merrijigs and Marvin Guy. Waiting on the leader until the straight was reached. Germanicus took charge to win comfortably by a length. Marvin Guy was nearly 50 yards away, eight lengths in front c£ Merrijigs and Bosun, who were together. One Dividend. On Parade was a pronounced favourite for the Improvers’ Handicap, 80 units above the Wrecker-St. FelixErin’s Star combination. Dolly Huon, Essay and Black Watch all broke early, and Directum tripped and fell turning into the back the first time, and caused Auspicious and Midnight Sun to lose their drivers. Evening Sun took up the running from the start from On Parade, Rare Pronto, Wrecker, St. Felix, Midnight Sun and Margaret Bingen. This lot held their places with minor changes along the back and round the top, but coming down the straight Rare Pronto ran off the course. On Parade began the last lap just in front of Evening Sun, Margaret Bingen, Tatsy de Oro, Wrecker and St. Felix, all in a bunch. Tatsy de Oro went to the front at the back from Wrecker, Margaret Bingen, On Parade, and Lord Lupin. Wrecker supplanted Tatsy de Oro at the far turn, w T hen Erin’s Star ran up to the tail of the leading division. Wrecker led into the straight from Margaret Bingen, On Parade and St. Felix, and stayed on to

win nicely by a length from Erin’s Star, who had no great difficulty in defeating Margaret Bingen by half a length. On Parade was a length further back, with Evening Sun and Tatsy de Oro next. Wrecker, who was recently sold by Mr H. F. Nicoll to Mr G. J. Barton, is a half-brother to Germanicus. winner of the trotters’ race. He was driven by E. C. McDermott, owing to the illness of W. J. Tomkinson. As first, and second horses, owing to contingencies attached to the sales of Wrecker and St. Felix, had to be coupled, there was one dividend only.

An Exciting Finish. Great Author 568 wound up favourite for the President’s Handicap, but many backers again put their trust in the erratic Black Lion, who showed 410 tokens. Rollo, John Noble and Proud Dillon broke up at the start, and Black Lion also went off very badly. Sunchild and Royal Comrade were quickest to get to work of the front line, and at the stand (with half a mile covered), the order was Sunchild, Royal Comrade, Hostess, Colonial Boy, and Tarndale, with four or five others close up. Racing up the back Sunchild and Royal Comrade were carrying on from Hostess. Colonial Boy. Tarndale and Mac Dillon, with Nimble Direct (who began slowly) close up, and Wrackeen leading the others. Passing the stand with a lap to go Royal Comrade and Hostess headed Sunchild. who left the rails, and they led out of the straight from Colonial Boy. Tarndale, Mac Dillon, Sunchild and Nimble Direct,. Wrackeen and Baron Bingen moved up a bit at the back, and at the top Hostess, Sunchild, Royal Comrade. Tarndale and Nimble Direct were piloting a bunch. A great race ended in Hostess hanging on just long enough to beat Nimble Direct, by a short neck, with Tarndale, who was finishing faster than either, another neck away. Wrackeen was fourth, but was several lengths back, followed by Colonial Boy and Great Author. Both first and second horses were going to a break as they passed under the wire. Black Lion broke again in the second round, but his chance then was hopeless, and Great Author never emerged from the ruck.

Easy for Onoto For the Levels Handicap, the Donald couplet. Automatic and Special Sun had most admirers, showing 170 units more than Colorado, with Accras and Gunfire also in good demand. Guy Denver, Accras and Sonoma Ladciie cracked up early and were never in the contest. Needles was first away, from Le Fashion. Onoto, Colorado and Ballade. and at the back this bunch had drawn away from Special Sun. Needles led Ballade. Onoto. Le Fashion and Colorado past the stand with a lap to go, there being long gaps to Special Sun and Automatic. Special Sun made up ground on the bend and along the back, and at the far turn the order from the j front was Needles, Onoto, Colorado, Special Sun, Ballade having dropped out beaten. Onoto paced to the front at the top. and led into the straight from Needles, Special Sun and Colorado. Onoto was not troubled to win bytwo or three lengths from Needles, who was driven cut to beat Special Sun by two lengths. Colorado was fourth and Jean Drusus fifth. Onoto has taken a new lease of life since his owner entrusted his son with the driving, and he has never run a bad race for M. Clare. Needles stayed on well for such a hard puller. Edith voyage Unlucky. First Wrack 945 dominated the betting in the Waimate Handicap, the twe-mile trotters’ race, but there was close betting between Edith Voyage 343, Stanley Bingen 300, and Real Boy 268. Edith Voyage broke and lost a lot of ground at the start, First Wrack was slow to move, and Accumulator and Stanley Bingen tangled rather badly at the end of a furlong. Hydro made play from Real Boy and Esbine, and at the end of half a mile Hydro and Real Boy were six lengths in advance of Esbine, with Great Burton. Mickey Audubon and First Wrack following in that order. Hydro made a mistake on the eastern bend and Real Boy got away from him, and along the back the call was Real Boy, Hydro, Esbine, Mickey Audubon. First Wrack and Great Burton. Real Boy went to pieces at the top, leaving Esbine to commence the last round just in front of Edith Voyage, who had put in a great run from the rear. Then came Hydro, Great Burton, Mickey Audubon, First Wrack, and Stanley Bingen. First Wrack made a forward move cn the bend. Hydro and Edith Voyage both went to a gallop at the back, but Hydro did not lose much ground, and he led round the top from First Wrack, Great Burton, Edith Voyage and Stanley Bingen. Hydro kept his gait to the end to win by a length and a half from Edith Voyage, who beat Great Burton by three lengths. First Wrack, who finished weakly, was two lengths further away. Stanley Bingen broke in the straight when he looked a possibility for a place. Hydro made two breaks in the race, but did not lose nearly as much ground as Edith Voyage did in her two tangles. With ordinary luck the Winchester mare would have won comfortably. A Huge Dividend. There was a fine field of eighteen in the Salisbury Handicap, a race which in the past often attracted a small number of runners. Aristotle, Great Chenault and Lord Antrim all broke and lost ground in the initial stages. Accras, Elite Bingen, Lord Matchlight and Erin’s Advance were the early leaders and at the stand (four furlongs), Lord Matchlight, Russell Pointer. Nimbus, Great Chenault and Lord Antrim were in charge, the two lastnamed having made up ground rapidly. Russell Pointer led Nimbus, Lord Matchlight, Lord Antrim and Erin’s Advance along the back, and they were there at the top, with Royal Parade and Lomar next. Russell Pointer and Nimbus, Erin’s Advance and Lord Antrim, Lord Matchlight and Royal Parade, began the final round in pairs, with Mountain Ore and Lomar handy, five or six lengths covering the lot. They were hard at it along the back against the wind, and at the top Erin’s Advance, Mountain Ore, Lomar, Royal Parade and Russell Pointer were in close order. A good finish between Mountain Ore and Erin’s Advance ended in favour of the former by half a length, the Oamaru-trained mare having had to race on the outside. Lomar was three lengths away, with Royal Parade two lengths further back. Lord Matchlight and Russell Pointer led the others home. Mountain Ore. who was at one time in F. Holmes’s stable, carried only £25/10/-, and returned a very big dividend. Black Lion Atones. In the Pareora Handicap there was a close contest for favouritism between the Sodium-Steel All bracket 493, Black Lion 471, and Princess Mauritius 466. Royal Comrade, Proud Dillon, and Dillon Logan went amiss at the start. John Noble this time began smartly and set the pace to Princess Mauritius. Passing the stand the order was John Noble, Princess Mauritius, Baron Bingen, Black Lion, Tarndale and Sodium, with Rollo also well placed. Tarndale broke up at, the back, and when the top was reached John Noble, Black Lion, Rollo and Sodium had drawn to the front, and looked likely to provide the placegetters. Black Lion cut John Noble down in the straight and won by a length from Sodium, who

finished better than John Noble and secured second money by half a length. Baron Bingen was another length away, with Princess Mauritius and Rollo next. There was a demonstration from a section of the public against the winner, and this apparently prompted the stipendiary steward to lodge a charge of inconsistent running. After a lengthy hearing the judicial committee decided that there was no ground for action to be taken, a verdict which was confidently anticipated by those who closely watched the running of the President’s Handicap, Farewell to Oxford Queen, With nineteen starters in the Farewell Handicap there was ample material for brisk speculation, but the holdup of the totalisator money on the previous race spoilt the pool. Harold Denver 326 and Headlight 323 disputed favouritism, but what betting there was took a wide range over Oxford Queen 289, Donna Gulvallis 287, Lord AntrimNeedles 226. and Sister Rose-Mountain Dweller 224. Lord Antrim, Sister Rose and Lomar failed to leave the mark. Lord Matchlight secured a moving despatch and was soon out in front from Needles and Donna Gulvallis. Oxford Queen began smartly from the second line, and quickly paced into fourth position. At the stand the leaders were Lord Matchlight, Needles, Donna Gulvallis, Oxford Queen, Royal Chenault and Winter Audubon. Lord Matchlight left his feet and lost ground cn the eastern curve, being headed by Needles, Donna Gulvallis and Oxford Queen. Donna Gulvallis led Oxford Queen, Lord Matchlight. and Needles to the straight, but the Victorian mare succumbed to challenges from Oxford Queen and Lord Matchlight, Oxford Queen winning by a neck from Lord Matchlight, who finished unsteadily. Donna Gulvallis was a length aw r ay, three lengths ahead of Guy Denver. Morrison was put out of thp race through a sulky wheel being wrecked by another competitor. Detailed results are appended:—

MORE ABOUT PHAR LAP. j DIFFERENCE IN MILES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 24, 7.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 23. The “New York Herald-Tribune’s” racing editor, discussing Phar Lap. says the contemplated'test race should prove an excellent test of his form on a dirt track. One real race should be worth a dozen “work-outs.” The writer states that it will surprise none if Phar Lap is also entered for many big Eastern handicaps, which h?.ve not yet closed. He discussed the difference between the Australian and American racing mile, saying that whereas the Australian mile is said to be 1760 yards on the rail, the American mile is also 1760, but at two feet from the rail.
