Mr E. E. Nicolson, of Dunedin, to paying a business visit to Timaru. Mr R. T. Simpson, of Dunedin, passed through Timaru yesterday on his way south. Mr J. B. Shacklock, of Dunedin, was a passenger for the south by the express train from Christchurch yesterday. Mr W. R. Sandrey, who is well known in the motor business in Timaru and district, has joined the sales staff of Timaru Motors Ltd. The Right Reverend Bishop Bennett has been detained by illness in Christchurch, and has been compelled to abandon his tour through South Canterbury. All his engagements are cancelled. To enable him to visit the educational institutions of America, Professor J. Shelley was granted leave of absence for the 1932 session by the Canterbury College Board of Governors. Dr. W. R. Fea, of Timaru, represented the South Canterbury Division of the British Medical Association at the 99th annual conference held at Eastbourne (England). Several New Zealand delegates were present, including Dr. T. Mill, of Christchurch, late president of the B.M.A. (New Zealand). The congregation of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Sydenham, decided unanimously to send a ca’l to the Rev. Lawrence Rogers, of Franklin Junction. The Rev. J. D. Webster was minister of St. David's Church until about six months ago. when he was compelled to retire because of illhealth. On Friday next Mr H. H. Sterling will retire from the position of General Manager of Railways and will take over the chairmanship of the Railways Board. Mr J. J. Esson who has been chairman of the board to date, will retire in favour of Mr Sterling. Mr Sterling's contract with the Railway Department is now up and normally he would have been entitled to retire on a pension of £2041 a year, but this pension has been greatly reduced, having been calculated on an actuarial basis, and he will receive a pension in addition to his salary of £IOOO a year as chairman. The Board will comprise Mr Sterling. Sir Jam*»s Gunson. Messrs E. Newman, D. Reese and G. W. Reid.
