New Zealand is once again to the fore in the English theatrical world. The latest young Maorilander to achieve success overseas is Hilda Saunders. Five years ago she left here with her mother (a daughter of the late James Godber of Wellington) and began her theatrical career under J. C. Williamson’s in Australia. Then, tWelve months ago. she went to London. There, under the name of Jill Anthony, she began by doing film work at the Gainsborough Studios and at Elstree, and returned to the stage to play the leading juvenile role in a revival of that time-honoured farce. “When Knights were Bold.” Managers speak enthusiastically of her, and, as she is a highly trained dancer and has a delightful singing voice, it is expected that she will be seen in musical comedy in the autumn. Yesterday afternoon, in her charming flat in Wai-iti Road, Miss Marion Hay gave a delightful tea-party in honour of her sister, Mrs Clifford Thompson, Dannevirke. Miss Hay received her guests wearing a frock of nigger brown velvet with beige cuffs and collar of lace. Her sister, Mrs F. Smith, Temuka, wore a black cloth skirt with a short black velvet coat worn with a white crepe de chene blouse and small black turban hat. Mrs Thompson’s frock was of yellow and black crepe de chene made with a flared skirt and the bodice finished with a cross over collar of beige georgette. The rooms were charmingly arranged with prunus and spring flowers. During the afternoon, a booktitle guessing competition was held, Miss Knubley being the winner. The guests were:—Mrs F. A.
