NEWS AND NOTES.

An Otago High School Old Boys’ Association’ meeting and reunion will be held at Tyrol Tea Rooms on Monday next, at 8.

i Great interest is being aroused in | Melbourne following the announcej rnent that the Chinese Government has adopted a definite policy concerning the use of wool for the army, and

is arranging for the establishment of woollen mills at a cost of £750,000. In view of the fact that it is not long since the Japanese Government began to take an active interest in woollen goods, and the remarkable change in customs in that country has taken place, inasmuch as woollen goods are now being universally worn, it is considered that there is tremendous scope for expansion of the sale of wool to China, and it will not be surprising if in the years to come it is one of our best markets. During the past year the market was mainly supported by Japanese operators, and that country has more than doubled its purchases during the past three years.

Conditions have been unfavourable for lambing during the last few weeks in the Waikato, and where the breeding ewes are in exposed paddocks the mortality among the lambs is high. Of 60 lambs born on an unsheltered farm near Hamilton, in the last few days, 40 are dead. Lambs are thriving well on hilly country, where there is shelter from the bleak westerly winds prevailing. Small farmers are placing their breeding ewes in sheds until the iambs are strong enough to withstand the weather conditions.

,Dr H. Crichton-Miller a Harley Street nerve specialist, addressing a conference on mental health at the Central Hall, Westminster, said that the phase of civilisation we had reached had uncovered a large amount of marital discord. This had existed previously, but. owing to pressure of religious authority and public opinion, had been carefully kept secret. ‘When the parental idea has waned,” he continued, “the mere mating aspect of marriage has been inadequate to take its place, and the stability of the marriage bond has suffered in consequence. Thus we see that in the important sphere of marital relations the inexorable demands of civilisation are again responsible for much discord. The small .family is the product of economic ■ pressure, and at the same time the cause of diminished harmony and stability in marriage.!’
