ORARI.
FLOOD MENACE. Residents have followed with interest the work under the unemployed scheme, carried out by the Geraldine County Council. Several drains have been cleaned out in and around Orari, included amongst them being the drain along the main road from Belfield to Winchester. One big fault in the drainage at Orari has, unfortunately been overlooked. On the western side of this road, the drain runs alongside the rally, way properties until it meets the junction of the road from Geraldine. Here, the water is permitted to flow across the open road to rejoin the drain on the other side of the joining road, and continue south. The result is that this junction is always a large lake of water during wet weather and for days after. In addition the road surface is continually being worn away, and loads of shingle have to be put there every now and again, causing the water to spread further abroad on its way south. The trouble is bad enough during any wet weather, but during heavy flood, when the river backs up along its banks and overflows into the paddocks on the eastern side of the road, the situation is worse. This winter, heavy snows are falling on the back hills and Alps, and If warm spring nor’-westers come, there will be floods, especially if accompanied by heavy rain locally. With unemployment labour at hand, the Council has an opportunity to put a pipe drain connecting the two drains and raise the surface of the road to cross it. School children often have to tramp through a running stream In wet weather. TENNIS CLUB. The popularity of the Tennis Club's social evenings was again apparent on Saturday evening, when there was an even better attendance at the Orari Hall. Misses G. Brown, H. A. Kiely, and W. Bray were the hostesses. The entertainment committee, consisting, of Misses C. G. McQueen and M.. JKilloh, and Messrs R. Earl and L. Pemberton, provided an excellent programme of games, items and competitions. Items were rendered by the following: Miss G. Hughes (solo), Mr W. E.
