MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

TIMARU, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5. (Before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.) Breach of Probation. Brian Henry Doyle, was charged that being a person released on probation, he failed to comply with the conditions of the order. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson said that on May 11th accused was convicted on a charge of causing wilful damage, and was admitted to probation for twelve months, a special condition being that he refrained from visiting hotels and consuming intoxicating liquors. On the same date a charge of fighting had been preferred against him, on which he had been convicted and fined £3 and costs, and ordered to pay expenses amounting to , £1 16s 3d. Accused had not paid the expenses, but had been drinking. Doyle was quite all right when sober, but not desirable when drunk. He was willing to take out a prohibition order. Doyle explained that he had been unable to secure employment, and therefore could not pay the expenses. Mates had given him the drink. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within nine months, the Magistrate warning him that if he appeared before him again he would be sent to gaol. Judgment by Default. Judgment by default for plaintiffs was entered in the following civil cases; Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association v. A. H. Maekie, balance of claim 6/2, and costs 21/-; Charles G. Baker v. J. Shewan, claim £4, costs 23/6; John Jackson and Co., Ltd. v. J. Tait, claim £1 3s 7d, costs 18/-; Adams Ltd. v. R. D. Hutchison, claim £2 12s 6d, costs 8/-. No Orders. After examination as to their financial positions by counsel, the Magistrate made ho orders against Arthur Henderson, who was proceeded against on a judgment summons for £ll 19s 6d by E. T. Aitken, and Bruce Day. from whom R. Clatworthy sought to recover £7 13s.
