SCHOOLS’ TOURNEY.

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL. INTERESTING CONTESTS. The annual seven-a-side football and six-a-side basketball tournaments conducted by the South Canterbury Schools’ Sports Association were held on Fraser Park on Saturday. In the early morning the weather conditions were not at all promising, light rain falling until after 8 o’clock. Brighter conditions then prevailed, however, and when the tournaments were commenced at 10 o’clock, the weather was fine, but cold. By noon the sun had made Its appearance, and the afternoon remained fine. No fewer than 78 teams participated in the football, and 59 teams in the basketball, a majority of the schools throughout the district being represented. The handling of the large number of matches necessitated by the big entries in each section, entailed no small amount of work on the part of the officials, and taking into consideration unavoidable delays, the programme was put through in an expeditious manner. As was only to be expected, a spirit of friendly rivalry was in evidence throughout the day, the children from the various schools heartily barracking their representatives in the various grades. The girls displayed perhaps more enthusiasm than the boys, the cheering at times being almost deafening.

The standard of play in both football and basketball was high, and tt was apparent that many of the teams had trained assiduously for the tournaments. The interest displayed by the public was not marked, but those who were present were privileged to spend an enjoyable day. The tournaments could hardly have worked out more satisfactorily, honours being fairly evenly divided, Timaru Main being the only school to capture more than one grade in either section. The various winners were:—Football: Senior, Marist; junior, Waimataitai; third grade, Temuka; fourth grade, MSin; bantams, Main; country section, Pareora East.
