SNOW SPORTS.

MT. COOK SKI CLUB. (Special to the “ Herald.”) THE HERMITAGE, July 26. Ideal weather is promised for the Mt. Cook Ski Clubs sports, which are to open to-morrow afternoon. No fewer than forty competitors and their friends have been quartered at Ball Hut since Friday, with the ostensible object of becoming familiar with the courses. The sports will extend over two days, the principal event tomorrow being the championship crosscountry race over a course from the head of the Tasman Glacier, to the Ball Hut, via Pineapple Track, the distance to be covered being approximately 14 miles. The only other event to be decided on the opening day will be the three-mile open novice crosscountry race. The visitors at the Hermitage comprise parties from Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington. A party of Timaruvians is expected to-morrow. Those who will participate in the sports will not return from the Ball Hut until Wednesday morning, and the presentation of prizes will take place on Wednesday evening. Some of the best ski-ing exponents in the Dominion will be taking part, including- Murie, last year’s North Island champion, Dr Paul Wood, B. B. and J. H Hamilton, Ferrier, R. O. Page, Miss Peggy Williams, Misses Kent, Munro and Mackie and Mrs Ferrier.
