WAIMATE.

HARD FROST. The whitest, but not the heaviest frost, experienced in Walmate this winter was in evidence yesterday morning, when 11J degrees were recorded. UNEMPLOYMENT. The unemployment returns at 5 p.m. on Saturday, supplied by the Government Certifying Officer for Waimate (Mr G. W. Brown), showed little variation from those of the previous week, there being 172 men on the books against 171 a week earlier. During the period there were 11 new applications for employment; six were withdrawn unrenewed, and four men were placed on farms under Scheme 4a. The latest list comprises 125 married men and 47 single men. ACKNOWLEDGMENT. j The Medical Superintendent of Waij piata Sanatorium acknowledges receipt of a consignment of books, periodicals etc., donated by the residents of Waij mate, and forwarded by the Mayor (Mr | O. Dash). STUDHOLME WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. There was a very good attendance of members at the July meeting of the Studholme Women's Institute. The president, Mrs Kippenberger, welcomed several members who previously had been absent on account of sickness. Two new members were elected. The Roll Call on ‘The Uses of Tea Leaves” gave some helpful economyhints. A demonstration on the making of children’s slippers was given by Mrs E. Rollinson. A pair of women’s slippers crocheted in variegated l-affla, with soles made out of an old leather j school-bag; also two cushions and two purses in wool-work, and a book-cover made by Mrs F. Henshaw, were much admired. A box of children’s garments made out of old stockings, lent by the president of the Dunedin Stocking League, was shown, and it was suggested that I members bring an old or new garment | or material to each meeting to help the i needy. i Mrs Manchester, president of the Waimate Ladies’ Benevolent Society, I sent a parcel of new flannel, and several members took material home to make up. The president announced that a I meeting of officials and members of | the eight Women’s Institutes forming the Waimate Group would be held in the Methodist School-room, Waimate, on July 25, when arrangements would be made about exhibits for the Women’s Institute tent at the Waimate Show. Magazines were exchanged, and the singing of the Institute Song brought the afternoon to a close. COMBINED SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT. A sports tournament open to pupils of the schools east of Waimate took place recently, when pupils from the Morven Public, Morven Convent, and Nukuroa schools, accompanied by their parents, journeyed to Willowbridge for the occasion. A football match was played between teams representing- the combined Nu-kuroa-Willowbridge schools and the 1 combined Morven Public-Convent schools. After an exciting struggle it ended in a draw, both teams scoring | nine points. Referees for the football \ were Messrs J. Heath and Richmond. | Four teams competed in a basketball [ competition, in which the combined j Willowbridge-Nukuroa girls defeated ! Morven Convent by 8 goals to 1, and | Willowbridge secured a victory over Morven Public School by 19 pts. to 1. Misses Johnson and Higgins refereed for basketball. At the conclusion of the games, afternoon tea was provided at the school. The headmaster, Mr A. G. Williams, after extending a hearty welcome to the visitors, said that the object of the gathering was to select representative teams in basketball and football from the schools east of Waimate to play the western schools in Waimate, and ultimately to choose the representatives for the proposed Town versus Country matches. The captains of the teams and Mr H. Horsnell, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the people of Willowbridge for their enjoyable afternoon.
