IMMIGRATION POLICY IN U.S.A
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald.” Sir,—Before me lies the boast of a New York hyphenate newspaper that party power in the coming Congress is so evenly balanced that the hyphenates will have everything their own way in the matter of immigration control. In other words, the non-Nordic group in Congress expects to prevent any quota against Latin America, though we maintain it against Great Britain, from whom, we have inherited our institutions. They also boast that they now see their way clear to use the balance of power to destroy the Quota Act, under which we are receiving practically all of our immigration from Nordic lands, such as England and Scotland. The above may stimulate public opinion in your Dominion toward sternly barring non-Nordic groups. Once they obtain the entering wedge, they tend to drive it home, splitting apart party groups if necessary in order to break down Nordic race consciousness.—-We are, etc. IMMIGRATION STUDY COMMISSION. By C. M. GOTHE, President. Sacramento, California, U.S.A. May 15.
