In statement, the chairman said that receipts since last meeting amounted to £IOO/18/4 and the accounts presented for payment totalled £620/17/3. Return of Patients. The return of patients showed that during April a total of 63 males and 60 females had been treated. At the beginning of the period there were 22 males and 17 females in the institution, and during the month 41 males and 33 females were admitted and 34 males and 31 females discharged, leaving 29 males and 19 females still in the Institution. The collective days’ stay was 1355 days, making the number of occupied beds 45.1 per day. Fees Increased. The South Canterbury Hospital Board wrote advising that it had decided to raise the fees from £3/3/to £4/4/- per wees, to operate from May Ist. Mr Sinclair questioned the wisdom of raising the fees, and asked if it were thought that more revenue would result. The chairman said he did not think it would. Mi- Dash said something should be done to rule out the Waimate Friendly Societies from having to pay extra under the bed scheme. He pointed out that under the increase the Timaru Societies’ scheme was not affected, as they worked under a flat rate. The increase would create difficulties for the Waimate scheme, as the agreement was to pay half fees. On the motion of Mr Dash, it was decided to represent to the Board, the position In which the increased fees placed the Waimate Friendly Societies’

bed scheme, and ask that the rise should not apply to the Society. In connection with the increase in fees, the Hospital Board wrote advising that as a result thereof the estimated receipts from the Waimate hospital had been increased from £I7OO to £IBOO. Comment was made on the fact that though the fees were increased onethird only £IOO more was expected from the Waimate hospital. Salaries Reduced. The Hospital Board advised that under instructions from the DirectorGeneral of Health, it was necessary to curtail hospital expenditure substantially, and the definite instruction had been given to reduce salaries and wages 10 per cent. This reduction the Board had no option but to carry out. The steward reported that the reductions had been brought into oflect. Transfer of Matron. The Board further mentioned that the matron of the Timaru Hospital had been granted six months’ leave, and the Board had decided that Miss Farquhar should act as relieving matron. Miss Fraser had been appointed to relieve Miss Farquhar. Mr Hayman said if Waimate representatives had not been present at the Board meeting, he would have made a complaint on the change without consulting Waimate. Mr Hay: "I thought it was a compliment to Waimate.” Other members expressed similar opinions. Appreciation. Mrs M. Hcrtslett, Waimate, wrote expressing the appreciation of herself and family for the consideration shown her daughter while in hospital. Donation Asked. The Waimate Ladies’ Benevolent Society wrote asking for a donation in order that the Society might be kept in existence. Mr Hayman said the Committee could not comply with the request. The Department had forbidden the giving of donations. Mr Sinclair said he thought the Society could obtain funds by public subscriptions, as they did very good work. Resignation. Nurse A. Carver wrote resigning from the nursing staff of the hospital. —The resignation was accepted. Superintendant’s Report. The Superintendent (Dr Shackleton) reported that the work of the hospital had been progressing smoothly. The fever ward had been opened, and there were four cases. It was necessary to appoint a temporary junior sister to re-place Sister Fraser, who would undertake the matron’s duties while .the latter was relieving matron In Timaru. Nurse Baird had commenced on probation. Nurse Barber had returned from annual leave. The report was adopted, and the matter of a temporary sister was left to the medical staff. Dr Wylie was appointed superintendant for the ensuing term. House Committee’s’ Report.
