New Zealand declared their first Innings closed in their match with Leicestershire with eight wickets down for 434. Leicestershire, when stumps were drawn, were all out for 277. I. B. Cromb distinguished himself, taking five wickets for 62. Dawson gave Leicestershire a good start before he was caught at cover. Merritt then claimed the wicket from Berry and Armstrong shortly before lunch. Shipman batted solidly for 58, when he was beaten by a good ball from Merritt. Astill and Riley gave sound displays. Coleman used a long handle effectively. Sidwell and Snary made a great effort to avoid a followon, failing by eight runs. The innings closed for 277. The New Zealand bowling was steady. Cromb and Merritt had 28 overs and Weir 34. Cromb made a highly satisfactory start, turning to the off occasionally, and maintaining a good length. He bowled ten maidens. RESUMPTION OF MATCH.
