Mrs R. Talbot. Temuka. is on a visit to Mrs D. J. Young. Christchurc.il. Miss J. R. Barr. Girls’ High School, is on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs A. E. Lawrence. LeCren Street, has left on a visit to Levin. Miss C. Flamank is on a visit to Dunedin and Central Otago. Mrs Alan Nicholls, Harlaw, Christchurch. is..spending a holiday at The Hermitage. Mt. Cook. Mr and Mrs N. McGregor. Geraldine, have left on a visit to Oamaru and Dunedin. Miss Dorothy Mac Lean, Girls’ High School, is spending the holidays in Wellington. Miss Jill Hislop, Geraldine, will leave to-day on a short visit to Mrs Stephen Gillingham, Fairlie. Miss Arnott. Silver Birches, Sophia Street, has left to spend a holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. W. Vine, Elizabeth Street, are spending a holiday at Peel Forest. Mrs Will has returned to “Cadogan,” Sefton Street, after a visit to Christchurch. Mrs MacPherson, Craighead Diocesan School, left on Monday on a short visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs P. A. Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley, left yesterday for Wellington, to meet their younger son, who has returned from England. Miss Audrey Wilson, Sydney, has left for the north, after spending some weeks with her aunt, Mrs P. A. Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley. Mrs M. G. Bruce, Rollesby, Burke's Pass, who has been on a visit to the Southern Lakes, is the guest of Mrs A. L. Long, Wai-iti Road. Mrs Barron and Miss Dorothy Barren, arrived from Dunedin yesterday, and are staying at The Bungalow, Wai-iti Road. Mrs J. G. Young and her two little girls, Dunedin, arrived yesterday to stay with Mrs George Bowker, Sealy Street. The engagement is announced of Mairi, eldest daughter of the late Norman Campbell. Woodbury, and of Mrs Campbell. Otipua Road, Timaru, to Leslie, elder son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Dale, “Downlands,” Albury. Miss Stops, England, who is staying with Mrs Burdon. Woodbury. w r ill leave to-day to stay with Mrs Fraser, Fairlie. During her stay Miss Stops, who is the voluntary advisor from London, will address the members of the Women's Institute, Fairlie. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Last Tuesday the Otipua Women's Institute held a delightful birthday party, Miss Stops, England being the guest of honour. The proceedings commenced with the singing of the “Institute Song," and the presentation of a bouquet to Miss Stops. Miss Withell (president) expressed pleasure at so large an attendance, and 6aid how very pleased all were to welcome Miss Stops again. As no definite programme had been arranged, Miss Stops gave a lesson in “Smocking,” “arranging programmes,” and a short talk on the work of the N.C.W. Miss Talbot (secretary) read a letter from Mr Clutha McKenzie” (Auckland) asking the Institute to interest itself in the selling of the goods of the Blind Institute. —This was agreed to. A competition “best article made from a flour bag,” was then held. Mrs H. Caldwell with a child’s frock, was awarded first prize, second prize being awarded to Mrs Lunham. Miss Stops, complimented Mrs Lunham on the making and icing of the birthday cake. Each member subscribed 3d towards its cost. A letter received by Mrs Evans from the Dunmow Institute, Essex, was read by Miss Stops. The writer mentioned having heard a talk on New Zealand butter, over the wireless, and was astonished that so small a country could produce so much. Miss Stops pointed out, that by writing to Institutes in the Homeland much advertising could be done. Miss Rita Hill agreed to write the next letter. The hostesses for the afternoon were: Mesdames Arden. Allen. Black, Chapman, and Misses Black, Chapman and Davidson. Mrs Percy Talbot and Miss Vincent were welcomed as new members.
