Economies are being effected among the State Departments bv the compulsory retirement of employees with 35 years’ service, although some exceptions will be made. It is the intention of the Government to put off as many as possible by this means. Steps have already been taken in the Railway Department and Post and Telegraph Department to retire members of the staff who are not necessarily high officials. A large number will be affected in the Railway Department. It is understood that the total number to be retired throughout the whole of the Public Service will be about 2000. The action Is being taken in preference to actual retrenchment. Those put off will be entitled to superannuation.
