ROAD FATALITY AT SEADOWN.
POTHOLES BLAMED. MOTOR-CYCLIST DIES IN HOSPITAL. Fatal injuries were received by Cyril ! James Moore, aged 22. of Winchester, when he ifcas thrown from the motorcycle he was riding on the Main North Road, near Seadown, yesterday afternoon. Moore was returning from Timaru at about 3.30 p.m., and as he swung out from the left side of the road to pass Mr A. E. Smith’s motor-car, which was standing outside Mr S. Cain's residence, Seadown, he struck a number of potholes. The machine zig-zagged and threw its ride - , whose head received a severe battering. Dr F. A. Scanned, of Temuka, was immediately ’phoned for, and after he had dressed the wounds Moore was taken to Timaru Public Hospital, by St. John Ambulance, where he died shortly after admission. “The machine was not travelling fast when the accident happened,” Mr Bert Smith, who was sitting in the car, told a ‘‘Timaru Herald” reporter. ‘‘A car had just passed, and I heard the motor-cycle’s engine and looked back. The rider appeared to strike at least two pot-holes as he swung his machine out on to the centre of the road to pass the car, and lost control. The cycle hit the ground on one side, and then bounced on to the other, throwing the rider one way and crashing the other itself.” Mr Smith, who has just come out of hospital, summoned his father from the house, and Mr Smith senr. telephoned to Dr Scannell, who ordered the injured man’s removal to Timaru Hospital. Moore was bleeding freely from the head when picked up, and was unable to speak. His skull was fractured. The motor-cycle, an o.h.v. twin-port machine, was not badly damaged, but the left exhaust pipe was flattened out and the battery smashed to pieces. The skid mark on the road was 15 yards from where the cycle fell. The young man, who was popular in the district, took a great interest in motor-cycling, and was a member of the South Canterbury Motor Cycle Club.
