POPPY DAY ESSAYS. At a meeting of the Geraldine branch of the R.S.A. on Friday night, the results of the essay competition organised by the R.S.A. for the children in the Geraldine and Mt. Peel Ridings of the Geraldine County were announced. They were as follows: — Std. VI. —Eileen Thornley and Leslie Brown (equal) 1. Std. V.—Rex Barrell 1. Std. IV.—Frank McKenzie (Woodbury) 1. GOLF SEASON OPENS. Despite bitterly cold weather on Saturday afternoon, there was a good attendance at the official opening of the Geraldine Golf Club’s 1931 season. No speeches marked the occasion, but a number of friendly games were enjoyed. Afternoon tea was provided by the president’s sister-in-law, Mrs David Readdie. FOOTBALL ONCE AGAIN. Cricket was forgotten on Saturday, and football again held sway. On the Geraldine Oval, the ground was prepared for the forthcoming season, under the direction of the Club’s secretary (Mr M. Hayes) and a practice was held despite the soft nature of the field. At Winchester, the Waihi seniors defeated Hinds to the tune of 23 to nil. GENERAL NEWS. A meeting to arrange a farewell to ■ the postmaster (Mr D. L. Hatton) was held in the Mayor’s office on Saturday night. There was a good attendance and a number of apologies were received. It was decided to open supscription lists and the following were given books: —Messrs A. A. Readdie, M. B. Hayes, R. J. McKeown, E._ _H.
| Logan, J. Kennedy, W. Sparks, W. McClure, and J. D. McKechnie. Mr M. B. Hayes was appointed secretary, and Messrs E. White and B. Logan were asked to arrange lor the social programme. PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mrs Boutherway, of Geraldine, is visiting Dunedin. Mr T. H. Bannehr will return to-day from a visit to Christchurch. Miss R. Creemer, Timaru, is spending a holiday in Geraldine as the guest of Miss E. Mclllroy. Mrs D. Nutsford has returned from a holiday in Christchurch. Mrs -E. H. Logan and Miss Ina Logan, Geraldine, have returned from a holiday spent in Wellington. Mrs McGregor, who was the guest of Mrs W. McClure, Geraldine, has left for Wellington. Mrs J. D. McKechnie has returned from a holiday in Oamaru. Miss Freda Crowe is staying with Mrs W. F. Shakespear. Geraldine. Mrs E. A. Scott, of Timaru, who was the guest of Mrs Webber, Geraldine, has returned home. Mr and Mrs J. W. Miller, Geraldine, have returned home from a holiday in North Canterbury. Mr L. S. R. King, of Pleasant Point, has been appointed postmaster at Geraldine, to fill the vacancy caused by the promotion of Mr D. L. Hatton to Carterton. Miss Stops, voluntary organising secretary for the Dominion for the Women’s Institute, will arrive in Geraldine to-morrow. She will preside at the annual conference of the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes on Wednesday. Members of the Geraldine Boy Scout troop under their Scoutmaster, Mr F. J. C. Turner, paraded at Church on Sunday morning. ANZAC DAY APPROACHES. Anzac Day arrangements were discussed at a meeting of the Geraldine branch of the R.S.A. on Friday night. It was finally decided that services will be held on similar lines to previous years. It was reported that the principal speaker for the service would be the Rev. J. F. Coursey, and the soloist, Mrs Ross Brodie.
RIVER IN FLOOD. The rain experienced in Geraldine on Friday—63 points—caused a fresh in the river. The Rangitata and Orari were both also dirty. Bitterly cold conditions were experienced on Friday, but sunny weather was enjoyed yesterday. HARVEST FESTIVAL. Harvest festival services were held at St. Mary’s, Geraldine, on Sunday. There were large congregations, and the preacher was the Ven. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, of Timaru. MAGISTRATE’S COURT TC -DAY. A short sitting of the Geraldine Magistrate’s Court will be held before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., to-day. A meeting of the County Council will also be held. The Geraldine Borough Council meets to-morrow night. POPPY DAY ARRANGEMENTS. Final arrangements for Poppy Day were made at a meeting of the Geraldine R.S.A. on Friday night. The president (Mr W. McClure) reported that a number of ladies had volunteered their services in connection with the selling of poppies on Wednesday, and everything pointed towards a successful day. He anticipated that a good deal of relief would be required for sick and unemployed ex-servicemen during the coming winter, and felt sure that people would respond to a cause that had always been treated sympathetically by the general public.
