FOOTBALL. Temuka won the annual friendly : Rugby football match against Hamp- i stead iAshburton), at Ashburton, by 6 ! points to 3. on Saturday afternoon. As ! the scores indicate, the match was a j very evenly contested one. The home J team were first to open the scoring, one | of the Hampstead backs notching an i unconverted try about half way through Ithe first spell. Determined to equalise ! matters, the Magpies set up a series of j sharp attacks. A. Gaffaney finally go- ; ing over. The second spell found both teams j engaged in an earnest contest, but in ! play the honours were even, neither ] crossing the other's line. Temuka's winning three points came from the penalty goal towards the end of the spell by W. Duke. After the match the visitors were entertained to dinner, at which several toasts were honoured, the president of the Temuka Club. Mr A. H. Abbott, responding. CATHOLIC CLUB ROOMS. Further minor improvements are being effected to the Temuka Catholic Club rooms. For some days a number of workmen have been modernising the equipment and appurtenances in the refectory, and in addition to installing new sideboards, have made a spacious serving slide in the partition wall between the kitchen and the main hall. The painting of both inside and out of the hall will be done later on. REBUILDING PARISH HALL. The work of rebuilding the burnt portions of the Parish Hall has been going on for a little more than a fortnight, and a great deal has already been accomplished towards restoring the hall to its former efficiency. All the charred timber has been pulled out and replaced with new and solid wood. Although the bulk of the work so far has been actual clearing-up work, so well have the workmen laboured that already the framework as well as the roofing of the two ante-rooms at the west end of the hall have been put up. The glaziers and painters have done a great deal of the work preparatory to the job of painting the entire structure. All the building material for the whole work is on hand, but it is not anticipated that the hall will be ready for use until about the end of next month W.C.T.U. MEETS. The Temuka branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met for its monthly meeting on Friday. Mrs Hewson presiding over an attendance of seventeen members. The meeting was opened with a short ’ devotional service. A considerable amount of correspondence was dealt j with. It was arranged to hold a cradle roll | afternoon in May. Mrs Hewson reported at length on her work as delegate of the branch to the recent Convention held at Nelson. Afternoon tea was served. DRUIDS' DANCE. Enjoying thoroughly the dance given by the Temuka Druids in the Druids’ Hall as the first of the series of weekly functions that the lodgemen have arranged for the winter season, many couples voted the innovation of Saturday evening dances a popular one. The gayest music was provided, and Mr K. Selwyn proved a capable master of > ceremonies. | A. AND P. COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association was held at Temuka on Saturday afternoon, when Mr W. F. Evans was voted to the chair in the absence of the president (Mr D. E. Lewis) at Invercargill. Letters were received from Messrs R. McGillivray and Mrs Evans, stating that there would be no expenses in connection with their judging at the Show. They had been pleased to be of assistance. The secretary presented a stetement of the estimated receipts, which showed that receipts this year would be about £419/16/6, as compared with £713/16/6 last year. Expenditure was slightly less this year, being approximately £577/3/-, as compared with £605/17/6 last season. The debit balance for the show was approximately £BS/6/6. Mr Evans said that from a produce point of view it was the best show that the Association had held, and this had been commented on by visitors from outside and overseas. He regretted that the weather had been against them, but they had a reserve fund of £9O in the Post Office and about £3OO in Post Office certificates. The secretary explained that although the actual loss on the day was about £BS, this was only for the day itself. There was other capital expenditure at the grounds which would run to about £2O. Messrs J. C. South and Fletcher spoke on similar lines to Mr Evans. | regretting the weather and stating that they were fortunate to have a reserve fund. The secretary’s statement was accepted, and a number of accounts passed for payment. The letting of the show grounds for grazing was left in the hands of Mr R. Maddren, chairman of the Grounds Committee. PERSONAL. Miss Glenys Sherborne returned from Invercargill to Temuka on Saturday.
