MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. Despite inclement weather, there was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Orari Men’s Miniature Rifle Club on Wednesday evening, when Mr W. E. Cook, club captain, presided. The chairman congratulated the club on its success during the past season, in annexing the B Grade Hayhurst Shield and C Grade Clement Shield in the South Canterbury Rifle Association’s competitions, and the C Grade South Shield in the Geraldine County Rifle Association’s competition. He congratulated Mr L. Wood, winner of “B" aggregate medal, and Mr A. Henderson. runner-up "C" grade aggregate medal in the South Canterbury competition, and Mr J. Hewson. winner of “C” grade aggregate medal in the Geraldine competition. The members had practised regularly throughout the season, and meetings had been well attended. Two new i rifles purchased at the beginning of the season had given every satisfaction. He expressed thanks to the members of the committee for their hearty cooperation, and to the secretary and treasurer for the faithful manner in which he had carried out his duties. The Club had also to thank many donors and those who had helped on various occasions in the transport of members to other centres. He regretted that he would not be able to take an active part in the Club’s affairs during the ensuing season. The treasurer, Mr A. Earl, read the annual balance sheet, which showed the receipts to total £37 19/2. Expenditure amounted to £3l/10/2, leaving a credit balance of £6/9/-. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.; president, Mr H. Killoh; vicepresidents, Messrs W. Hughes. W. It was decided that the opening shoot should take place on May 20th. and that the subscription for the year be 5/-. It was decided that an aggregate medal to value of 30/- and a runner- | up trophy valued at 10/- be shot for | during the season; and that shooting | should take place as in previous years j for a challenge medal, the winner's i trophy valued at 75 per cent of entry money, and runner-up's trophy 25 per cent. TENNIS TOURNAMENT. The Easter handicap singles tournament of the Orari Tennis Club was postponed on account of the wet weather. The Club again struck bad weather on Saturday, and the tournament Is once again held up. WEATHER. A further spell of dull wet weather was experienced in Orari last week. After fine weather for Monday and Tuesday, light rain fell early on Wednesday morning, but quickly cleared for a few hours. Rain again set in on Wednesday evening and fell in heavy showers during the night, 9 points falling in a very short time. Dull conditions prevailed throughout Thursday, and on Friday rain once more commenced to fall from the south-east, continuing throughout the day with a few light showers still falling on Saturday. The rainfall for Friday amounted to 3 points. 'WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. At the meeting of the committee pf the Women's Institute Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald (president), was in the chair, with Mesdames S. Unwin, W. Hughes, H. A. Brenton. D. Bennett, G. Worner, W. E. Cook (secretary), Misses de Latour, H. Kiely, C. McQueen, and F. Grimsey also present. It was decided that in future the general meetings of the Institute should be opened with the singing of the Institute song. Correspondence from Mrs Turner Williams, Hawke's Bay, was dealt with. It was decided that the Institute should carry out the resolution of the Wellington Conference, that Institutes throughout New Zealand should nominate and support women candidates for School Committees. The programme for the following eight months was considered and drawn up. It was decided that Miss A. Stops, voluntary organiser, should be invited to speak at the next meeting. Mr G. I. Hamilton was appointed auditor. SOCIAL. Miss A. Stops, voluntary organiser for Women’s Institutes in the Dominion, is expected to arrive in Orari on Tuesday, and will be the guest of Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald. Mrs G. Blissett, Orari, is on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs G. Worner and Mrs W. Hughes, ! have been appointed delegates to re- j present the Orari Women’s Institute at j the annual meeting of the Federation ! in Geraldine. Mrs E. Wilks, Wilkin Street, Temuka, was the guest of Mrs Stevens, Orari, ! last week. BIRTHDAY PARTY. Jollity and sociability were features of the annual birthday party of the Orari Women’s Institute on Thursday evening, when the Institute celebrated the conclusion of the second year of its existence with a social and dance in ! the Orari Hall. There was a very j large attendance of local members and their friends, while representatives | were present from Rangitata Institute, Woodbury Institute, Geraldine Institute, Gapes Valley Institute, and Hilton Institute. Special committees had been appointed to make arrangements, and a very /ine programme had been arranged by the Committee, consisting of Mrs S. Unwin. Misses M. Blissett, H. Kiely, K. Muff. J. de Lautour, and M. Killoh. Supper was in the hands of the following committee: Mesdames W. Hughes. H. A. Brenton. W. Mason, i E. P. Chambers, w. Smith and Miss McQueen. The programme went ' I
through without a hitch. Mr W. E. Cook being master of ceremonies. Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald, president of the Orari Institute, welcomed the visitors, remarking on the success that had attended the Institute during the two years in which it had been in existence, and the fact that its membership had been increasing all the time showed that it was fulfilling a need in the district. She hoped that members would continue to support it with their attendance and interest. During the evening an amusing comedy “George Proposes,’’ by Stanley H. Hodson. was staged by members of the Orari Readers. The characters were portrayed by Miss de Lautour. ‘Miss Barbara Wilkinson), Mrs W. E. Cook (Miss Julia Broad) and Mr W. E. Cook (George Broad). A recitative duo-logue, “A Country Courtship,” by Misses C. G. McQueen and H. A. Kielly w r as well-received, while a charade was given by members of the Programmes Committee, the leading parts being taken by Mr and Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald. Games took up a large portion of the evening, these being musical Crowns, won by Miss Irene Unwin, Advertisements, won by Miss Joan Austin and Miss Gladys Watson, General Post, Peanuts, won by Mrs F. Priddle and Miss M. Blissett, while a lucky spot waltz was won by Mr A. Priddle and Miss M. Blissett. Prizes were presented to the winners by Mrs L. C. Williams, president of the Federation. Community singing proved very popular, a feature being the singing of the Institute Song to the “Londonderry Air.” Mrs Ross Brodie, Rangitata Island, contributed vocal solos. The accompanistes were Mesdames G. A. M. Macdonald, F. Priddle, Misses F. B. Wilson. M. Killoh, J. de Lautour and Gimson. After supper an important item was the cutting of the birthday cake, made and iced by Mrs A. Priddle, Belfield, a member of the Institute. The cake was cut by the president.
