NEWS AND NOTES.

Miss Vera Norman, the famous Berlei stylist has arrived. She offers to followers of fashion in Timaru and district, one of the most valuable services ever offered. It is the special free fitting and consultation service to be conducted at the corset department. McGruer Davies and Co., by the expert herself Commencing at 1.30 to-morrow, at 3 Rugby Street, Highfield, A. N. Oakey and Co. will conduct a sale of furniture, timber and sundries, on account of Mr A. C. Murray, who is leaving Timaru According to reports King Zogu of Albania smokes one hundred cigarettes a day, an indulgence that must go near a record. But even that number scarcely equals the twenty-five cigars a day for nearly sixty days that a resident of Berlin, who died a short time ! ago, claimed to have sent up in smoke. | He reckoned his total consumption at close on half a million, and shortly before he smoked his last cigar declared that having made a choice early in life between tobacco and a wife, he regretted nothing. He cynically confessed having obtained “some ten thousand hours of happiness such as no woman could ever have afforded." But this record was beaten by an Austrian, who kept an exact account of his smoking achievements from his youth onwards. By his seventy-third year he had accounted for 623,000 cigars. and it is a tribute to the carefulness which which he kept his smoking record that he was able to state that out of the total 43,500 had been given him.

Every yachtsman knows that the shag has a voracious appetite, but few would give him credit for what he can do when necessity arises. The prodigious swallow of the bird was proved during some investigations made by Marine Department officers on the Kaipara Harbour, where fishermen complain that the flounder and mullet are being decimated. The officers shot a number of shags and examined their stomachs. The pied shag was the variety most fond of fish. Among the finds in the birds' insides were two 4in flounders and two 6in mullet; one 122in mullet; one lOin. mullet; one mullet over 14in long; one 9in. flounder. One small black shag was found to be full of shrimps, of which 50 whole undigested, besides fragmentary ones, were counted. Rumour has it that the Eastertide , adventures of a young Dunedin lady I led her into a place not usually visited j by members of her sex. During her sojourn in the Ashburton district she i was indiscreet enough to look too long • upon the wine when it was red (presumably one does these things in a Prohibition district), and. unfortunately for her. the fact that she was in charge of a motor car at the time came under the notice of the local constabulary. It is understood that she was not very well known in Ashburton, and that the police had no other option than to lock her up. Since the fair prisoner did not posses “the wings of an angel.” she had to remain where she was during the pleasure of the law —a period, so it happened, which lasted from Easter Saturday to Easter Monday, and which thus gave her the experience of having two nights in a cell. Get your cut flowers direct from the nursery. Gladioli, scabious. Iceland poppies, coreopsis michaelmas daisies, gaillardias, asters, etc. All floral work made up from fresh flowers. P. G. Allen, 'phone 650. ANOTHER PROBLEM FOR MOTHERS. One of the greatest problems to-day for mothers is the increasing prevalence of worms in children. Invariably the symptoms of their presence are bad breath, grinding of the. teeth, itching nose, stomach pains, and disordered bowels. Worms will do a great deal of mischief to a child’s constitution if not checked. The easiest and most efficient remedy to give children is Ayres’ Chocolate Worm Tablets. Children like taking these chocolate tablets as much as they like eating sweets. Buy chocolate worm tablets (price 2/-) at E. C. Ayres’ Ltd., chemists, Stafford Street South, Timaru

Increasing unemployment in Germany has facilitated wage reductions, says an Aucklander who has returned from a European tour. He adds that the trades union leaders were convinced in the second half of 1930 that j the maintenance of wage levels was not | to the general benefit, and this opinion : gained strength when the number of unemployed rose to 4,765,000 in midJanuary this j'ear. which was an ini crease of over 400,000 in a fortnight. In the Ruhr mines an arbitration award reduced wages by 6 per cent, from January 1. The employers asked for a cut of 8 per cent., and the trade ; unions originally offered to accept 4 per cent. Before the award was made there were several local strikes in the Ruhr, but they were short-lived. Administrative salaries were also reduced. In January the process of wage and salary reductions was in full swing.

There have been many instances of trotting horses racing till well on in years, and the Opunake Trot at Haj wera on Monday added one more to j the list. In the field of seven were two veterans in Wimmera King (21 i years old) and Speculator (18 years). The veterans were not given much i chance of success by the betting public, but that did not prevent them from I taking most of the prize-money. Speculator winning, with Wimmera King in third place. Speculator commenced his racing career as a four-year-old in 1917. and that he should be able to win a race at 18 years of age says much for the hardiness of the son of Capitalist and Veneda. CHRONIC CONSTIPATION. Sir Arbuthnot Lane, the famous British physician, says that people with a pure blood stream will live much longer than those whose blood is poisoned by the toxins caused by constipation. Boils, pimples, indigestion, gastric ulcers, appendicitis, are often due to chronic constipation. The use of harsh purgatives gives only a temporary relief; they are habit-forming and dangerous. If you are constipated take Laxigen. This is a natural, gentle laxative that will restore the bowels to their natural wave-like movement. Laxigen is obtainable at 2/6 bottle from E. C. Ayres, Ltd., chemists, Stafford Street South, Timaru. One hairdressing establishment in Dunedin has adjusted its prices to meet the changing times, and in place of the long existing charges of 1/3 and 9d for haircut and shave respectively, its prices have now been brought down to 1/- and 6d respectively.
