POLICEMEN’S BANK ACCOUNTS.
NEW YORK REVELATIONS. Many New York policemen, whose salaries range from £4OO to £6OO a year, own luxurious homes and expensive motor-cars, and have banking accounts up to £IO,OOO. These facts were brought out by MX Isidor Kresel, special investigator for the Appellate Court’s inquiry into Magistrates’ Courts and the Police Department. It is believed that these revelations will induce the State Congress to realise that legislative investigation into the whole organisation of city government is necessary. A bill for such an investigation is now pending. Mr Kresel obtained much of his information as to the private fortunes of city policemen by ordering all banking and stock-brokerage concerns to report such accounts. Responses from 900 firms gave proof of large deposits by uniformed men and stock market operations involving thousands of pounds. An interesting witness examined was Ben Miller, described as a “professional fixer,” whose alleged boast that he could, for a price, secure the dismissal of any charge, from grand larceny down to violation of traffic rules.
