Farmers who are competing with the butchers in some of the country districts have caused a heavy reduction in the trade of some small firms, said Mr Charles Grosvenor, secretary of the Auckland Master Butchers’ Association. He has received numerous complaints that farmers were killing their own mutton and lamb and selling it in their neighbourhood, and the information has been laid before the Agricultural Department, with the result that offenders under the Slaughtering Inspection Act have been promptly dealt with. It is permissible under the Act for a farmer, by obtaining authority from the Department, to kill one beast and five sheep a week and sell the meat, but he must not carry on any operations in a borough or town district, or within three miles of the boundaries ol such districts. There have been complaints of competition by farmers in southern districts to an even greater extent than in Auckland, and in Canterbury, it is stated, a 601 b wether has been sold for 10/-, which worked out at 2d a pound.
