FAIRLIE.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Fairlie Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs West presiding over 54 members. Seven new members were elected. Mrs West gave an interesting talk on home-scoured wool. A mattress and quilt, made by Miss Creighton, were exhibited, and created much interest. An instructive lecture on First Aid was given by Miss Annett, of Wanganui. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the two lecturers. Mesdames West and S. Gillingham were elected delegates to the halfyearly Federation meeting. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. Morris, Hall, R. Manchester, Braddick, Boulter and Creighton. An observation competition was won by Mrs G. Manchester, terminating a successful meeting. “A QUIET GAME.” Not satisfied with the day's business at the Show, two men opened up business with a spinning w'heel in the Main Street, of Fairlie, on Show night, and quite a number of men were enjoying a. “quiet” game of chance. The game terminated suddenly, when the tw r o local constables stepped in and seized all the articles used for the game, comprising a spinning wheel, dart, number cloth, acetylene gas lamp, and a case used as a table. One of the men was taken to the Polioe Station, w T here a statement was taken by the constables. FIRE BRIGADE DANCE. The Fire Brigade held their annual dance in the Aorangl Hall on Easter Monday night. This event again proved very popular, and the hall was packed with dancers, including many visitors. The arrangements were well carried out, and the supper was in the hands of an energetic ladies’ committee. Music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, extras being played by a number of local people. Messrs H. Welsh and C. Boulter carried on the duties of M.C. LATE GALVIN NISBETT. Sincere regret at the sudden and tragic death of Mr Galvin (Bill) Nisbett at Timaru, was felt in the Fairlie district. The late Mr Nisbett was well-known throughout the district, having worked here for a number of years, and his genial nature made for him a large number of friends.
