THE RACING REVIEWED. j (Special to the “ Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. The weather was summerlike for the I concluding day of the Metropolitan | meeting, and with an absence of wind j and a firm track, conditions were ideal j for fast times. As a result the ex-Wai- j mate trotter put up 3.26 2-5 in the I opening event, and Admiral Bingen, though he established a track record, had to be content with second place. The mile saddle also was run at a scorching pace, but the times were comparatively slow in the President’s Handicap. Free Advice, who was penalised only 12yds for her Easter Handicap win, just defeated the favourite. Regal Voyage, and thus collected the two big prizes of the meeting for Mr G. J. Barton. Another record was established in the Halswell Handicap, when Red Shadow finished in 4.27, easily the best in Australasia for a three-year-old. This time, however, was eclipsed when Arethusa hoisted 4.24 in second place in the April Handicap, the pony’s performance being a remarkable one. Master Audo got home first in the trotters’ race, but there would have been few complaints if Bonny Spec had been awarded the major portion of the .stake. Rain which commenced to fall just before the seventh race had made the track a bit dead by the time the High-Class Handicap was decided, but this did not prevent Roi l’Or from making very fast time to head off the champion Harold Logan, who has been suffering lately from a tender foot. A Record for Trotters. Standby, who was unlucky on Saturday, was made an odds-on chance in the Harvest Handicap, with Admiral Bingen and Home Voyage next in demand. Bright Light broke at the start, and St. Petrox at the end of a furlong. Audobell and Repute took up the run- j ning, but Audobell broke before going into the back and Standby took charge from Repute and Nelson Boy (who got the best of the start). Standby led past the stand from Nelson Boy and Admiral Bingen, who were followed by Repute, Nelson Ata, St. Petrox and All Peters. Home Voyage and Eileen Wood were galloping in the ruck. Standby led down the back and round the top closely attended by Admiral Bingen and Nelson Boy, and in a hard finish won by half a length from Admiral Bingen, who beat Nelson Boy by a j length. Nelson Ata was four lengths j away. The race was run at a fast pace, and Admiral Bingen registered 3.18 3-5, a record for trotters at Addington or any other New Zealand track. A Win to Oamaru The Holmes trio—Harvest Child, | Eugene de Oro and Royal Comrade— | 1495, Cranleigh 1241 and Nelson de Oro ! 1059, were the popular selections for j the mile saddle. Mercury, Royal Com- i rade and Kotuku Jack all began too badly to have any chance in a fast-run race. Cranleigh, Mac Dillon and Zenith led down the straight and past the stand from Avonwood, Nelson de Oro, Harvest Child and Dilnon. Going down the back Cranleigh was clear of Mac Dillon, then came Nelson de Oro, Avonwood and Dilnon. with a gap to the next bunch. There was no change in the order at the top, though the leaders were closing up, and Krina was leaving the second division. Cranleigh held his own along the straight, and looked a winner half a furlong from home. Then Nelson de Oro, Mac Dillon and Dilnon closed on him and Krina made an unsuccessful attempt to get through on the rails. In a thrilling finish Nelson de Oro beat Cranleigh on the post by a head, with Dilnon a neck away. Mac Dillon was a length further back, and Krina was fifth. The place-getters all broke 2.10, Dilnon recording 2.9 for third money. Free Advice Again. Regal Voyage, who stood on the mark in the Easter Handicap on Saturday, was again made a short-priced favourite in the President’s Handicap, over 700 chances above Travis Axworthy, who was in slightly better demand than The Abbey-Free Advice combination. The Abbey failed to begin, and at the end of a hundred yards Lindbergh broke and caused Dundas Boy to fall, and Logan Chief fell over Dundas Boy. Pluto, Vesuvius, Harold Logan and Regal Voyage led for the first half mile, and at the stand were carrying on from Free Advice and Travis Axworthy. The last-named was checked when the accident happened, but a slow pace enabled him to recover his ground. Pluto led to the mile in 2.19 2-5, from Vesuvius, Harold Thorpe, Travis Axworthy, Regal Voyage and Free Advice, this lot being bunched. King Pointer had broken and dropped out, leaving six horses to complete the race. At the back Harold Thorpe and Regal Voyage moved up fast, and Travis Axworthy was unable to pace it with them. Then Free Advice commenced a rapid run, and at the top the leaders were Harold Thorpe, Regal Voyage and Free Advice. Regal Voyage took charge at the top of the straight and remained in front till right on the winning post, where she was caught and beaten by a head by Free Advice, who was cleverly handled by Tomkinson. Pluto was three lengths away, and fourth money went to Harold Thorpe, who was two lengths further back. Travis Axworthy was fifth. R. Ferguson, formerly huntsman at Waimate, earned applause by catching the two driverless horses which were careering round the track. Red Shadow Goes Fast. Milo Minto 1584, Hostess 1209, Great Author 977 and Red Shadow 972 received most attention when the Halswell Handicap came up for decision. Erin’s Lynn broke early and checked Playwave, and the backmarker Glenrossie was a bit slow to work up speed. Delightful, Milo Minto, Colonial Boy, Proud Dillon and Red Shadow all began smartly, and at the stand the first time the leaders were Milo Minto, Red Shadow, Hostess, Delightful, Colonial Boy, Jolly Pet and Great Author. At the back Great Author improved his position, and at the mile, which Milo Minto reached in 2.15 3-5, the order was Milo Minto, Red Shadow, Great Author, Delightful, Colonial Boy, Proud Dillon and Hostess. This bunch commenced the final round closely attended by Jolly Pet and Proud Dillon. Three furlongs from home Red Shadow took charge from Milo Minto and Great Author, and at the top the three-year-old had drawn away from Milo Minto, Delightful, Great Author, Jolly Pet and Colonial Boy. Red Shadow ran home a comfortable winner by three lengths from Delightful, who caught Milo Minto Just before reaching the post and beat him by a long neck. Great Author was three lengths away, just in front of Jolly Pet and Avenger. Red Shadow paced on the outside of Milo Minto all the way, and the decisive manner in which he won made him appear a very high-class youngster. Won by a Nose. There were a dozen starters in the Welcome Handicap, for three-year-olds, and the betting indicated that Aristotle 1614, Priceless 1087, Great Chenault 943, Chenaway 694. and Herod 613 were expected to run well. Shirley Bingen and Great Chenault lost ground at the start, and Aristotle did not go away as well as some of the others. Oro's Pride [ and Homeward made the early running, and at the end of half a mile they were still in charge from Priceless (who commenced very quickly). Aristotle, and Location- As they raced down the back Herod and Royal Parade joined

in, and at the top bend Homeward, Aristotle, Herod. Location, Priceless and Royal Parade were in a bunch. Homeward and Aristotle were practically on terms all the way up the straight, and Aristotle secured the verdict by a nose from Tomkinson’s outsider. Location was a length away, beating Priceless by a head. Aristotle is a half-brother to Avenger, and although he seems to be a rather lazy customer, he is a speedy and solid pacer. The first two cut nine seconds off their handicaps. Three-Year-Old Goes Cup Time. Mister Pointer 2072 and Real Girl 1571 overshadowed the others in the betting on the April Handicap, the slow two-mile race. Mac Dillon broke badly at the start, and Real Girl, Teremoa and St. George all dwelt slightly. Major Lind and Our George were first away, but Teremoa soon dashed to the front, and led past the stand three lengths clear of Major Lind, who was followed by Mister Pointer, Kreisler, Our George, Real Girl, Sonoma and St. George. Teremoa raced to the mile post in 2.12 1-5 from Major Lind, Mister Pointer and a bunch. In the straight there was a collision in which Sahib’s sulky was wrecked and Mister Pointer and Our George lost their chances. Teremoa entered the final circuit from Major Lind. Kreisler, St. George and Real Girl, and at the far turn the order was Teremoa, Major Lind, St. George. Major Lind and St. George headed Teremoa at the top, and St. George led into the straight from Major Lind. Teremoa and Arethusa, the last-named appearing on the scene for the first time. St. George came away in the straight and won by three lengths from Arethusa, who finished j brilliantly and beat Major Lind by two lengths. Kelp was three lengths further back. St. George stepped 4.27 1-5 off 4.40, and Arethusa registered the remarkable time of 4.24, and is the first three-year-old to qualify for the Trotting Cup. g Master Audo Lucky. The English trotter Stanley T. was installed favourite for the Sumner Handicap, with the Home Voyage-Sur-prise Journey bracket and Olive Nelson carrying nearly all the remaining money. Surprise Journey, Home Voyage and Fifa were slow off the mark. Master Audo quickly dashed to the j front and led past the stand from j Bonny Spec, Olive Nelson, Tonic, Native Star, Fifa and Stanley T. Master • Audo trotted to the mile in 2.22, clear of Bonny Spec, Olive Nelson, Tonic, Writer, and Fifa, and with a round to go it was Master Audo (skipping), Bonny Spec, Olive Nelson, Writer, Fifa and Tonic. There was a mix-up at the i back in which Olive Nelson, Native Star and Stanley T. broke, and the | favourite had a wheel buckled. Master I Audo led to the far turn on a break from Bonny Spec, and round the top from Bonny Spec, Olive Nelson and Native Star. Bonny Spec challenged Master Audo in the run home and forced him to a break, but the leader did not lose much ground. Master Audo broke again just before reaching the post, but galloped home by a head from the Winchester mare. Native Star was about four lengths away, a similar distance ahead of Surprise Journey. Bonny Spec, who trotted steadily all the way, must be accounted unfortunate. Roi VOr Comes Back There was a classy field for the High-Class Handicap, in which Free Advice was rehandicapped 12 yards. Harold Logan was made a solid favourite. the other heavy totals being entrusted to Roi l'Or and Travis Axworthy. The Abbey again misbehaved at the post, and Terence Dillon and Vesuvius were slow. Great Logan led over the first half mile from Harold Thorpe, Dundas Boy and Talaro, and at the stand Great Logan, Harold Thorpe, Dundas Boy and Vesuvius were almost in line, with Talaro, Travis Axworthy and Harold Logan forming another row just behind them. There were some rapid changes in the middle of the field as they flew along the back, and at the far turn Great Logan was attended by Harold Thorpe, Roi l’Or, Talaro, Harold Logan and Travis Axworthy. Harold Logan dashed to the front at the top of the straight, and was acclaimed as the winner, but Roi l’Or unwound a great burst of speed, and measuring the favourite fifty yards from home, beat him by a length. Free Advice was two or three lengths away, with Great Logan next. Roi l’Or’s effort topped off a notable day’s sport, and indicated that the Waimate pacer is back to his best form. It is understood that the Trotting Association will ask for a report from the totalisator proprietor, before deal-

ing with the late investment allegation referred to it by the Timaru Trotting Club. A new set of “number cloths”—stiff leather pads with large white figures, affixed to the shafts of the sulky—were introduced in the fifth race at Addington yesterday. The figures could be plainly seen at a considerable distance, and the innovation was greatly appreciated by the public. It should not be long before the use of the new numbers becomes general.
