WOOL PRICES ANIMATED.
British Buyers Lead Way. POSSIBLE IMPORT DUTY. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, March 22. Mr Devereux, the Australian Wool Growers’ representative, reports that the great animation in prices for all descriptions is well maintained, and British buyers continue to lead the way. There is an increase in Continental competition, France, Belgium and Germany securing a share of the offerings, withdrawals negligible.
Rumours are current that there are possibilities that the Budget may include the imposition of an import duty of manufactured goods for revenue purposes.
This, although considered somewhat doubtful, combined with the increasing activity of trade in Yorkshire, is stimulating British buyers. The strong position continues to affect the Bradford market. Merino and crossbred tops again advanced, and the business done was at increased prices. As a result of the strong market and cheerful tone, prices of tops in Germany improved and there were considerable sales of merinos and crossbreds. Belgian reports are fairly satisfactory, tops moving freely at Antwerp. The futures market is active and quotations have advanced. Tops in France advanced to the same extent as in other centres. There were good advances at Roubaix. The futures market is active at an advance of 5 per cent.
