RECKLESS SPENDING.

To the Editor of the “ Herald.” Sir, —It is indeed high time something was done to obviate this reckless gambling and drinking by unemployed single men. In a timely letter on the subject, your correspondent, Richard Barron, lays before the world at large, the terrible squandering of public money. Think of it! Why! The very idea of allowing these men loose with 26/- in their pockets is ridiculous, to say the least of it. It is simply putting temptation in their way. Therefore, I propose (and I know your correspondent Mr Barron, will heartily endorse this scheme) that the Labour Bureaux of the country, be empowered to keep 25/- out of this money to pay these mugs’ board; and that a national bank be set up for the sole purpose of taking charge of the odd shillings of these mugs. These shillings, as we are well aware, would ordinarily go in horse-racing, drinking, or some other vice. Any thinking person can see that in a year or two, this bank, working on this stupendous capital, will be a force to be reckoned with in the world of finance. In fact, New Zealand’s national debt will be a thing of the past.—l am, etc., PROHIBITED.
