GERALDINE.

OLD RESIDENT PASSES. The death occurred at Rangitata recently of Mrs Mary Chalmers, one of the oldest residents of the district, who had been in failing health for the past 18 months, being confined to bed for the last six weeks. Mrs Chalmers was born in a small village in County Clare, Ireland, in 1857, and came to New Zealand in 1877. . She lived for some time at Dunedin, later moving to Lyttelton, where she , married Mr Chalmers. In 1880 she and her husband took up residence in ■ Rangitata, which at this time was in i a very barren state, there being no i boundary fences. The nearest school . was at Orari. Mrs Chalmers had to work very hard, and even took her : turn in the fields to help her husband. She was well-known for her hospitality. and her death deprives the district of a very much respected and loved figure. She is survived by her husband and a family of six—Mrs J. Cook (Ashburton), Mr G. C, Chalmers (Lyttelton), : Mr J. C. Chalmers (Temuka), Mrs J. C, Kelland (Orton), and Messrs G. C. and W. Chklmers (Rangitata). CRIBBAGE ASSOCIATION. The annual report of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association states that the season 1930 was a very successful one, ten teams having entered in the Association’s competition. The results were as follows:—Orari Bridge, 63; Gapes Valley, 62; South End. 59; Orari A., 57; Citizens, 57; Orari 8., 55; Bowlers, 52; Hilton, 51; Farmers’ Union, 41; Oddfellows, 41. The final round was played on September Bth, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, and at the conclusion of the games the Mayor, Mr J. Kennedy, presented the shield to Mr F. C. South, captain of the Orari Bridge team. A little trouble was experienced in seating the players last season, and the committee hoped to be able to. make better arrangements for the coming season. The Committee wished to thank all who had helped in any way to make the season 1930 so successful, and trusted that the coming year would be as pleasant and enjoyable. UNEMPLOYED’S PAYROLL. Wages paid to the unemployed working in the Geraldine district totalled £233/0/8 last week, representing a total of 357 working days. In the Borough, where 42 men were engaged, the payroll was £lO4/6/8, and in the county, where 76 are engaged, the amount of pay totalled £l2B/14/-. “THREE GODFATHERS/’ TO-NIGHT. One of the most unusual and distinctive pictures screened, based on Peter B. Kyne’s famous story, “Three Godfathers,” will be shown at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night. Its plot deals with the reactions of three western bad men when they find themselves with a new-born baby on their hands in the midst of the desert. They had promised the child’s mother, before he died, that they would take the baby to the little frontier town of New Jerusalem. A killing trip across the desert awaits them —and they know that at New Jerusalem, if they ever get there, the noose is waiting also. This dramatic situation furnishes material for a picture rich in romance, pathos and humour. Supports include a two-reel comedy, gazette and cartoon. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The need for a Miniature Rifle Club in Geraldine was stressed by many during last winter, and it is likely that steps will be taken shortly to form a Club in the township. Steady rain fell in Geraldine yesterday afternoon following two or three days of trying nor’-west conditions, and the visitation had the effect of clearing the atmosphere considerably. A nor’-west shower was experienced during the evening, when three points were recorded by Mr B. R. Macdonald, “Waitui,” Geraldine. Mr E. Cholerton, representing John R. Proctor’s Ltd., the Premier Opticians of Christchurch, will be making another Professional visit to Geraldine on Wednesday, March 25th, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on that date
