ANNIVERSARY DAY.
CELEBRATED IN OTAGO. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, March 23. To-day was celebrated the anniversary of the arrival in March, 1848, of the first ships under the settlement scheme of Otago. Of 96 passengers who came by the John Wickliffe, only one (Mrs Griffiths, of Inchclutha) is alive today, and of 248 who came in the Philip Laing five remain. At the celebrations this year, only one of this band of six pioneers put in an appearance—Mrs W. Allan, now in her 85th year. Services were held in First Church yesterday, and to-day there was a gathering of old identities and descendants in the Early Settlers Hall.
