EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

SOUTH CANTERBURY BRANCH. The annual meeting of the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held in the Main School on Saturday. Mr W. Garton, M.A., presided over a fair attendance. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Complimentary reference was made by several members to the good work done by the executive and the secretary. The finances were shown to be in a very sound condition, and it was resolved to assist those teachers in Hawke’s Bay who had suflered loss in the recent disaster to the extent of £SO. or if need be, up to £IOO. The election of officers resulted in the position of president being filled by Mr W. Garton; vice-president, Mr W. L. Harrison; secretary and treasurer Mr Alex Lindsay; committee of management, Misses H. G. Schmidt, I. M. Donald and A. Tizard, Messrs Street, Calder, Winnlngton, Southward, A. S. de Montalk, and P. W. Campbell; delegate to W.E.A.. Mr Campbell; delegates to Wellington Conference, Mr W. Garton and Miss Tizard; auditor, Mr B. H. Lowe Sympathy was expressed with Mr W. Thomas in his illness, and it was hoped that he would make a rapid recovery. It was resolved to hold an exhibition of the work done in South Canterbury schools at the end of the year.
