The beginning of the season’s midweek informal dance was held at the Broadway Cabaret on Wednesday evening. The dance was greatly enjoyed and quite a number were present. The large room looked very cosy and bright. Many popular numbers were recorded by request and Mr F. Edney played several dance numbers on the piano. Supper was served during the evening and dancing continued until midnight. "Fame at last,” so writes a clever young New Zealander in description of the one-man exhibition held by Miss Fanny Hodgkins in London recently. Miss Hodgkins’ father, the late W. M. Hodgkins, was one of our noted artists, and her sister, Mrs W. H. Field, of Wellington, has been termed the "New Zealand Corot.” Miss Hodgkins has been in Europe studying and painting for many years, both in France and in England. She had a studio at St. Ives (Cornwall), in the famous Art colony there, and the Hon. Mrs. Ralph Vane was one of her pupils. A few years ago, she received a very high salary for designing cretonnes for a British business firm. But her artistic and Untrammelled soul revolted against the conventions of commercial art, and so she very characteristically cut the painter from ignoble security and a surplus of cash.
Painting fluently on her own modernistic lines, Miss Hodgkins has now achieved fame—" Fame at last,” my correspondent writes, and continues "Miss Hodgkins is more modem than ever. Every picture has been sold and some are very highly priced, from £6O to £75. This is a wonderful record at such a time, when money is so scarce. All artistic London is chatting in terms of Miss Hodgkins and her original interpretations of life and cclcur.”
