After the earthquake it was reported that some of the records of the Bank of Australasia were destroyed at Napier, and that ledgers and tellers' cash, amounting to some £3OOO or £4OOO in notes and coin, were reported to have been lost. As a matter of fact, the staff of the bank, at great risk of their own lfves, saved the ledgers and practically all the cash, only a few pounds of silver being lost. As the report appears to have caused a certain amount of unnecessary uneasiness amongst the customers of the Napier branch of the bank, it has been given an authoritative denial.
The' m.v. Hawera was in difficulties at Patea for an hour after grounding on a shoal between the breakwaters. The vessel was loaded with cheese for Wellington and only succeeded in getting- clear of the ground with the combined forces of winches, screw, and the swell. The ship returned to the Patea wharf.
A lady who is well-known to Blenheim retailers, walked into a butcher’s shop the other morning (says the “Express”), and ordered a joint. The butcher wrapped it up. As the lady extended her hand for the parcel she observed sweetly, “I suppose you don’t mind if I pay for it next Thursday.” The butcher’s hold on the parcel tightened perceptibly, but he executed a graceful bow. “Not at all, madam,” he responded, gallantly, “provided that you do not require the joint until next Thursday I”
Keen satisiaction was expressed at the last meeting of the Marlborough Power Board in regard to the manner in which the board’s concrete poles had stood up tq the recent succession of heavy gales. The chairman, after remarking that the gales were of unusual severity, stated that he had received information that a southern power board, using wooden poles,
suffered £990 damage in one blow, while ,a few days later a further 40 poles went down. In Marlborough, though the gales were the heaviest for many years, not a single pole had suffered damage.
