WAR DEBTS.

PROPOSED CANCELLATION WITHIN THE EMPIRE.

United Press Association—By Klectrlo Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 28. "I am entirely in favour,” said Lord Rothermere in a message to Australia through the Australian Press Association, “of the cancellation of all war debts between constituent members of the British Commonwealth. I believe this great step will have to be taken towards the extinction of all war debts between the Allies and other associates who fought together in the Great War.” VIEWS IN OFFICIAL CIRCLES. PROPOSAL SURROUNDED WITH DIFFICULTIES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received March 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 28. Little encouragement is given from official quarters to Lord Rothermere’s advocacy of the cancellation of Australia’s war debts, indeed there is a considerable disposition to regard it as a disservice to Australia, whose misfortune is being made the occasion for newspaper exploitation. Downing Street circles emphasise that even the Commonwealth has never suggested a cancellation. Any attempt in that direction involves similar treatment to other Dominions, and would perhaps re-open the whole fabric of reparation agreements.
