RACING AT RANDWICK. BOOKIES ON STRIKE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 1, 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 1. The New Year’s Day meeting at Tattersall’s Club races was held at Randwick to-day. The attendance was officially at 25.000, compared with 40,000 at the meeting last year. A number of bookmakers refused to pay the Government annual tax of £7O pending the likelihood of the ten per cent, winning bets tax being modified or repealed. Over fifty bookmakers’ stands were unoccupied. A plain olothes constable seized a telegram at the racecourse telegraph office, alleging the sender was communicating a starting price to a bookmaker in the city, thereby endeavouring to defeat the winning bets tax. The incident caused a commotion. Principal results were:— NEW YEAR GIFT HANDICAP, Sir Chrystopher, 9.0 (Munro).. 1 Compodonico, 8.7 (McLachlan 2 Panola, 8.12 (Pike) 3 Fourteen started. TATTERSALL’S CUP, Jeypore, 8.8 (Cook) 1 Spearman, 8.2 (Johnstone) .. 2 Voleuse, 7.9 (Reynolds) .. .. 3 Eleven started. Jeypore led all the way with Pavilion, Exact, Star d’Or, Spearman and Dalston, the nearest attendants. Voleuse and Spearman tried to overtake Jeypore in the straight, but the latter finished too strongly and won by half a length, with four lengths between second and third. After the first race an inquiry was held into alleged interference by Tar Baby with Valueless, but the Judicial Committee decided that any interference was purely accidental, and did not affect the result.
