TEMUKA.

CRICKET. The match, Hutt versus a combined Temuka and Geraldine team was concluded at Temuka yesterday, the visitors winning by four wickets. Hutt’s first innings did not last much longer yesterday morning, the total being added to by only 4 runs. Hammond top-scored with 65, and his eort was a fine one. In their second essay, thanks to a fine 153 by R. Sharpe, the combined team fared much better, and knocked up 222. Sharpe’s was an innings full of sparkle, and he hit freely at all the bowlers. He was stumped by Hammond when he jumped out to an elusive ball from McSherry. Bowling honours were shared by McSherry, five for 20, McKay, two for 25 and Drennan, three for 29. Hutt required 92 to win when they commenced their second innings at 3.45, and these were secured, for the loss of six wickets, before 5 o’clock. Play was continued until 5.30, when two additional wickets had fallen and the score stood at 131. Again Hammond came to light, and knocked up 39 in good style. Lockett, with a similar total, was undefeated at stumps. Tully secured four wickets, and Edwards, Dwan, Dixon and Sharpe one apiece. TEMUKA-GERALDINE. First Innings. R. There will be a comprehensive sports programme and baby shows, and the day’s enjoyment will be capped off by a Cinderella dance in the Club rooms. Temuka, in the evening. PERSONAL. Mr G. W. The number of children who received Christmas cheer from the Temuka R.S.A., was over 90. Sixteen members of the Temuka Municipal Band visited Fairlie on Monday and played at the jubilee celebrations of the Fairlie District High School. Holiday weather was not so favourable in Temuka yesterday, although rain that threatened in the morning fortunately held off. The town water supply dwindled to a mere trickle last evening. The first picnic of the Temuka Farmers’ Union, and of the Women’s Division, will be held in the Temuka Domain on Saturday. “DARKENED ROOMS.” Evelyn Brent has been elevated to stardom by Paramount, and her first picture under her new glorification, “Darkened Rooms,” will be seen at Temuka to-night. It deals with the evils resulting from fake spiritualistic practices. Miss Brent appears in the dramatic role of the medium for Neil Hamilton. She sees the hyprocrisy of his “game” and tries to persuade him to give up this false life. Hamilton is resolved to continue his “racket,” with its choice revenues gained by fleecing wealthy clients. Miss Brent, however, by some neat trickery of her own, manages to bring him to his senses. Excellent support is given Miss Brent by Hamilton, David Newell and Doris Hill.
