Removing part of the track near Peipiao station, on the Peking-Muk-den railway, the bandits derailed a train locomotive. The boiler exploded and the train took fire. Many thirdclass passengers were burned to death. Two stokers and two officials were killed, and scores seriously injured. While the flames were raging, the bandits sacked the train, carrying off ninety merchants for ransom and releasing some who were poor. The outrage is considered the worst that has ever occurred on the Chinese railways. The deaths total one hundred. The mails also were stolen.
