MOTORING NOTES.

Some makers before the Briu Olympia Motor Show just recently held, took extraordinary precautions to keep the details of their new cars secret. They were, it is said, sent on to the roads for their test runs disguised as tradesmen's vans, or lorries with false radiators and bonnets. Others were secretly shipped out to inaccessible parts of Europe, where they could be run for miles without fear of being seen by rivals. “In the whole of my travels in Grea* Britain I did not meet a single bit! ness man who did not believe wholeheartedly that protection of industries is the only salvation of England,” said Mr. John Harrington, of Sydney, founder and managing director of Harringtons, Ltd., who arrived by the Niagara after an eight months’ business trip abroad recently. “If any manufacturer was in doubt about it he has since changed his mind in face of the example of the motor car industry. Everyone remembers the outcry that was raised when a duty of 33 1-3 per cent, was imposed on foreign cars entering Great Britain. It was asserted that the public would be badly hit, yet the result has been an immense improvement in the quality of the British cars and a great reduction in prices owing to the increased output. Local competition has effectively prevented any possibility of profiteering. What has been done in the motor industry would follow in any other industry which was protected,” Mr, Harrington said.
