AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. OUTSIDER WINS CUP. RAILWAY TO HUNTING CRY. By Teic«r&plj—Press Association AUCKLAND, December 26. The Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting opened at Ellerslie in

perfect weather to-day. The track was hard and fast, and there was a large attendance. A feature of the racing was a sensation in the Cup race, in which outsiders came home at the head of the field. Gay Crest was first past the post, defeating Motere by a neck. A protest was entered on the grounds that Gay Crest had interfered with Motere, and after an inquiry by the Judici aClommittee, the placings were reversed. The rider of Gay Crest, A. Eastwood, was also suspended for four days, but after hearing further evidence regarding the tendency of the horse to run out in the straight, the stewards remitted the sentence. Motere returned a long price. The totalisator handled £9,087/10/-, compared with £121,417 on the opening day last year.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “ Herald.”) DUNEDIN, December 26. Following rain overnight, the weather was hot and northerly for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, and the wind quickly dried the track. Field of Four. Beauty Light and Gay Fashion could not be produced in the hurdles, and in a field of four, Antrim Boy was made a pronounced favourite, with Membo in better demand than Amorist. Amorist and Craigmore led Antrim Boy to the mile. Then Amorist went on by himself, and at the last hurdle was a length ahead of Antrim Boy. Longley’s gelding won easily from Membo, who worried Antrim Boy out of second money.

Win for Favourite. Night Parade wound up favourite for the Trial Stakes, but there was a good pool, and the Timaru gelding started at a remunerative price. Musen’t Miss and Birdwood led round the top from Night Parade and Segrave. Half way down the straight Segrave took charge from Birdwood and Mustn’t Miss, but Night Parade finished with a great dash and got up to win by a head. Solanum, who was showing a mammoth dividend, beat Mustn’t Miss for third money. Outsider Wins. Meadow Lark, Spoon, Palermo and Waving Corn were the popular picks for the Federal Handicap. Caterpillar, from near the rails, and Royal Saxon began best, from Compensation, Spoon and El Boa, but Royal Saxon lost Ills place at the far turn, where a mix up occurred, and Royal Saxon, Silver Paper, Money Mine and Charmaine all went back. Caterpillar led into the straight from Compensation, Palermo, El Boa and Spoon, and stayed on to win by nearly a length from Palermo, who defeated Compensation by half a length. Meadow Lark finished fourth, another half length away. Caterpillar was not In much demand and returned a double figure price.

Dashing Finish. The Invercargill mare Night Rose, carried nearly twice as much money as Sailing Home, in the Salisbury Handicap, with Homecoming and Dumblane in most request of the others. Sailing Home and Palmary led down the back from Night Effort, Impertinence and Appeal, Dumblane being last. Impertinence and Sailing Home were fighting it out over the last hundred yards when Dumblane flashed Up through a lucky opening on the rails, and snatched victory by a head from Impertinence, who defeated Sailing Home by a neck, with Night Effort and Shortly, who were at the head of the next bunch. Otago Handicap. The little Southland mare Night Maid (1068), Selerity 11. (872), Compris (642 ), Salmo Salar (011), and Town Major (603) were the favourite selections in a field of eleven in the Otago Handicap. Jock o’ Hazeldean and Topere took up the running from Town Major and Celerity 11., and going down the back the order was Topere, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Town Major, Celerity 11., Footfall and Compris, the field being fairly well spread out. They closed up at the far turn, and raced round the top in a closely packed bunch. Camisader and Town Major looked to have good prospects half way down the straight, but Compris and Circulation

threw out challenges and a pretty race ended in the Judge awarding a short head verdict to Compris, with Town Major a head in front of Circulation. Camisader was threequarters of a length away, just in front of Topere and Evening. Two-Year-Olds’ Race. Ten two-year-olds paraded for the Dunedin Handicap, and backers plumped for Fair Weather (1324), Last March (1035), and Dulen (727), the first two having the best public form. Fair Weather, Last March and Hula Belle got away better than the remainder, and Fair Weather and Last March were still in charge a furlong from home. Then Fair Weather shook off Last March and came on to win by a length from Hula Belle. Dulen finished well in third place, wearing Last March down on the post. Fair Weather won the McLean Stakes in October, and is easily the best juvenile in the south just now. Some Toff in Form. Meprisant who has a big private reputation, was sent out a considerably better favourite than the Washdyke candidates Glenrowan and First Raid, in the Otokia Handicap. Red Boa, Some Toff and First Raid were in charge at the end of two furlongs, but Red Boa soon dropped back, and Some Toff and Glenrowan led to the straight, from Meprisant and First Raid. Some Toff drew out a furlong from home, and held on to win by threequarters of a length from Meprisant, who was half a length in front of Glenrowan. First Raid was half a length further back. Some Toff has been a very consistent performer lately and in his last eight starts has registered four wins and three seconds. Close Finish. Francolin, who had injured a hip, was withdrawn from the Burnside Handicap. In a field of fourteen, backers devoted most attention to Kakara (1214), Solmar (1138) and Steeton (1133). It was excellent picking. Solmuri and Insolvency set the pace to Traction, Kakara and Water Power. In the straight Kakara got to the front, with Killorna threatening danger. Kakara was clear half a furlong from home, then Solmar and Steeton got out of the ruck, and in a finish in which only the man in the box could adjudicate, Kakara secured the award by a head, with Solmar a head in front of Steeton. Fair Money and High Speed were close up.

Camisader and Celerity 11. both met with injury in the Otago Handicap, and are doubtful starters to-morrow. Taboo’s running was questioned in this event, but the explanation of the old fellow’s connections was accepted. SECOND DAY ACCEPTANCES.
