TEMUKA SPORTS.

ANNUAL GATHERING YESTERDAY. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. Officials: Patron, Mr W. McCallum; president, Mr W. F. Evans; vice-pre-sidents, Mr T. E. Shiels and Mr A. R. Beck; treasurer, Mr Geo. Haftcox; secretary, Mr J. H. Denison; standardbearer, Mr A. Russell; directors, Messrs J. Preddy, L. J. Grant, G. W. Higinbottom, W. J. More. J. C. Bisdee, T. E. Shiels. H. H. Hutcheson, S. Goddard, Geo. Hancox, W. McCallum, A. Bain. W. Seeler, G. A. Paterson, A. Russell, W. D. McCallum, G. Washington, S. Cooper, Fred. Bateman, H. P. Dunne, D. Sinclair, C. F. de Joux. The annual sports of the Temuka Caledonian Society was held in the Domain yesterday, in the presence of a good attendance of the public. The weather was all that could be desired, the sun providing a pleasing warmth through a thin layer of clouds, and making conditions favourable to both spectators and competitors. Both tracks were in excellent condition, the running track carrying a good turf and standing up well to the use to which it was put throughout the day. Prior to the sports, special attention had been given to the cycling track, which presented a smooth surface to the riders. Although not so numerous as in previous years, the entries were quite satisfactory, and there were very few scratchings. The afternoon’s sport was much appreciated and enjoyed by the spectators, and for the most part, finishes were of a close order.

As usual cycling events attracted most interest, and all the heats were contested by a large enough number of competitors to make them interesting. The first event in this portion of the card was the half mile dash handicap, and this was won by a promising cyclist in N. H. Goodman, who pedalled home from the well-known competitor A. C. Ritchie. J. I’Anson filled third place. The second event was the half mile handicap, and in this I’Anson filled the main place. Ritchie was again second and C. Bright third. The best finish of the day was recorded in the half mile South Island championship. At the top of the straight Ritchie appeared to be the winner, with I’Anson second, but Bright’s burst of speed, to supplant I’Anson, was a meritorious one. The first, and major running event, the 120 Yards Sheffield Handicap, was run off in two heats. In the final victory went to R. McKinnon, who proved too strong over the last thirty yards. L. T. Higgins was second and A. D. Cameron third. There were seven starters in the half mile handicap, although four dropped out en route, leaving M. V. Brown, A. F. Gaffaney and R. Hillary to finish in that order. The 220 yards drew six starters, although interest was robbed to an extent by the non-appearance of W B. Grade and C. H. Davidson, the scratch men. E. J. Croy was the winner, with A. D. Cameron second and J. J. Keenan third.

Owing to a mistake in lap-taking, the mile was cut short by one round, but officials decided to let the placings at the end of the third round stand, and set the time at 4mins 40secs. The end of this race, also, saw a protest made, for blocking, but nothing was done in the matterThe other field events attracted the usual attention, and in this, as in other departments, the sport provided was well up to standard. The Temuka Pipe Band was in attendance, and besides playing for the dancing, gave a number of acceptable combined numbers. The gate receipts for the day were £l2l, as against £123 last year. The day's enjoyment was brought to a close with a Cinderella dance in the Drill Hall in the evening, and this was attended by a large crowd.

There can be no doubt that the motor cycle events Went a long wav to increasing interest in yesterday’s gathering, and the Temuka Caledonian Society are to be congratulated on their initiative in introducing these events into sports gatherings in South Canterbury, and in the foresight in realising that the demand for more “thrills,” in public entertainment, has now to be catered for. The motor events were staged at the conclusion of the cycling races and when most of the field events were finished. The programme had been arranged by the South Canterbury Motor Cycle Club, ad was given by 20 members of the Club. Considerable danger was experienced by the riders who performed tricks that drew forth hearty applause. One rider parted company with his machine, which turned right over, but there was no damage done and the rider continued with even more daring stunts. The circular race in particular, was one in which the greatest degree of riding efficiency was required. There were three riders in the heats and they rode around the grass track at an amazing speed. Curves were turned without any appreciable slackening in speed, and there were numerous occasions when imminent crashes were dexter ously averted, and the spectators were not slow in applauding clever riding. Other motor events were an acceleration race, football match, musical caps, trick riding and miniature T.T., and in these there were humorous as well

as exciting interludes. No doubt the Society will find a place, and even a more extended one, for motor events, at next year’s gathering. Throughout the day the president (Mr W. F. Evans), secretary (Mr J Dennison), and officials worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the programme. The dancing section was i tlie only one in which delay was experienced, and this was considerably behind schedule—over one and a half hours. Results were:— CYCLING. % MILE DASH HANDICAP; £2/10/-, £l/10/-, 10/-. First heat—A. C. Ritchie (scr) 1, G. Bearman (18yds) 2, D. Cremin (20yds) 3. Also started—C Bright (10yds). Won by a wheel. Ritchie 2 1 J. I’Anson 3 Won by over a length. Ritchie and I’Anson closed up with Goodman and Bearman at the back of the oval, where Goodman put in a surprising spurt. Ritchie went after him, j but Goodman sustained his effort sufficiently long to get home a fairly com- j fortable winner. I’Anson was not far , away third. HALF MILE HANDICAP; £3, £2, £1 | First heat—J. I’Anson (10yds) 1, A. , McKay (85yds) 2, N. H. Goodman (30 1 yds) 3. Also started—T. Griffiths (55 | yds). Won by a yard. Time —63secs. Second heat—C. This was an interesting race from start to finish. The leaders set a solid pace, but soon gave way when joined by the rear men. At the back, several dropped out, leaving only Brown, Gaffaney and Hill to reach the tape. Brown proved the strongest runner, and led Gaffaney home by about five yards, with Hillary a similar distance back. 220 YARDS HANDICAP; £2 10/-, £1 10/-, 10/-.—E. J. Croy (6*yds) 1, A. D. O’Neill and Johns led the field for the first round when Gaffaney joined but retired. The scratch man, Hillary, had gained considerably, as had the remainder of the field. At the back,

in the second round, Hillary was running third, and two more dropped out. Then Cain showed up, and led to what turned out to be the finish of the race —the third round. O’Reilly was not far in front of Brown, but had the race been finished it is quite possible tnat Hillary’s name would have been placed either first or second. 220 YARDS (boys under 16) ; £l, 10/-, 5/-.—H.
