FIRE ON RACECOURSE.
GRANDSTAND DESTROYED. By Telegraph—Press Association. NAPIER, December 25. The outside grandstand at the Napier Park racecourse was completely destroyed by fire about midnight on Christmas Eve. The building seated 600 people, and in addition contained underneath a bar, luncheon stalls, cooking appliances, and other conveniences. It was fairly old, and was built of unusually sound timber. The totalisator house, about twenty yards away, narrowly escaped destruction, but a nearby shed, which housed the hot water service supplying the various parts of the course appointments came within the fire’s track, and disappeared. The outbreak was discovered by people returning home to Taradale and Greenmeadows after Christmas shopping in Napier, but nothing could be done to check the flames, as the locality is out of the Brigade’s area, and the water supply was meagre. The insurances are unascertainable.
