BAY CARNIVAL.

OPENING TO-DAY. The annual carnival, extending over Christmas and New Year, which is conducted by the Caroline Bay Association, will commence this afternoon at 2.30. The Influx of visitors this holiday season, particularly from the south, has been heavy, and it Is anticipated that the carnival will be well patronised. The success of the undertaking depends almost entirely on the weather, and the members of the Association and voluntary helpers are looking forward to favourable conditions. The Bay in the vinicity of the shelters has taken on its customary Carnival appearance, members of the Association having spent a good deal of time last week in erecting stalls and side-shows in readiness for the opening of festivities this afternoon. The programme of entertainment this year is again a comprehensive one. In addition to side-shows, which have proved popular in previous years several new ones will be introduced. Some of these have gained favour in other centres where they have been tried, and it is expected that they will prove equally attractive with the holiday crowd in Timaru. There will be plenty to interest the children, for apart from the merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, tilt o’ plane and chair o’ plane, a complete programme of races and sand-modelling competitions, extending over the whole carnival period, has been arranged. The children have always come forward in large numbers to participate in these competitions, and as they have been fully organised this year, little doubt is entertained but that they will again be successful. A party of popular concert artists from Dunedin has been engaged, and they will appear each afternoon and evening. In addition, the public will have the privilege of hearing concerts by the Municipal Band. Lovers of dancing have also been catered for, arrangements having been made for a dance to take place in the Bay Hall each night.
