AFTERMATH OF REVOLT.

Strange Scenes In Gaol. REVOLUTIONARIES IN FAVOUR. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 25, 7.15 pjn.) LONDON, December 24. The Madrid correspondent of the “Times” states that a crowd of visitors daily throng the dusty courtyards and corridors of the model prison incarcerating hundreds of political prisoners. Queues form up and visitors are admitted on merely stating their names. Fur-coated ladies carrying roses, priests and students are included in the procession, the cells resemble a zoo, each prisoner speaking from behind heavy grills, and stretching out hands to caress their friends. Prisoners may exercise in the courtyard and supplement the meagre canteen fare. The Republican feeling is evidently wide spread, gentlemen and workmen alike begging the honour of shaking hands with the members of the ill-starred provisional Republican Government. REPORTS OF RIOTS DISCOUNTED. CATHOLIC PRIEST SAYS SPAIN IS PROSPEROUS. “While I was in Seville, the English newspapers spoke of fierce rioting in that city, but I did not see a sign of it,” said Father E. A. Anderson, who returned to Christchurch on Tuesday, after several months spent on the Continent and in England. “Everything was very quiet during my four months’ stay in Spain,” he continued, “and yet at that time the English newspapers were giving graphic accounts of daily riots. I cannot possibly imagine where these accounts came from. The King is popular in Spain, the only colnplaint of the people being that he spends too much time in England. “I found the Spanish people very friendly and courteous, especially towards the English, which may be accounted for by the fact that the Queen is English. Many of the Spaniards that I spoke to had never heard of New Zealand. Several were certain that it was a part of the United States! The train service i 6 excellent. I travelled the whole south coast of Spain in a most luxurious carriage for £6. The roads are in wonderful order, and the telephone service is the most up-to-date in the world. During my tour of the biggest cities of Europe, I saw no buildings to compare with those of Madrid. The post office there was awe-inspiring. Spain is making wonderful progress. She is an isolated country, and what other countries do or think doesn’t matter in the slightest to Spain.” The depression was particularly noticeable in Germany, said Father Anderson. Unemployment was rife, a the Germans seemed very down in the mouth. France was the most prosperous, and at the same time, the most detested country in Europe. “In fact,” continued Father Anderson, “I myself considered the French a most unpleasant people. The people that I found it the easiest to get on with were the Austrians and the Spaniards. “Italy appears very happy and contented, and Mussolini is the right man in the right place. The Latin temperament is different from the English, and, although Mussolini might not be a success in England, he certainly seems to be the salvation of Italy.”
