FROZEN SOUTH.

OWNERSHIP OF ANTARCTICA. United Press Association—By Electrle Telegraph —Copyright LONDON, October 27. It is learned that the British Government offered Australia the custody of the areas in Antarctica discovered by Captain R. F. Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton.

This was one of many interesting statements reportedly made during the Imper.al Conference Antarctica Committee meeting. New Zealand formally claimed the lands of Antarctica between meridians 160 and 180. It is stated apropos thereof that no claims in connection with the Byrd Expedition were mentioned during the meeting. Complications appear to arise in connecting the various areas in question, because sovereignty is unestablishable without actual occupation immediately following discovery, and what constitutes “occupation” seems to be indefinite.
