WAIPAWA SEAT.
UNITED CANDIDATE. By Telegraph—Pres* Association NAPIER, August 29. A meeting of United Party supporters at Waipukurau to-night at which the Hon. E. A. Ransom and Mr J. A. Shand (general secretary of the Party), were present, unanimously requested Mr A. E. Jull to contest the Waipawa by-election in the Party’s interests. Mr Jull asked for a few days in which to decide. Mr A. E. Jull is chairman of the Counties’ Association, member of the Highways Board, and a past-president of the Power Board Association. He has been prominent in local politics in Hawke’s Bay for many years, and for a long period has held the chairmanship of the Napier Harbour Board. Though he contested the Waipawa Seat against Sir George Hunter several times, he was never dangerous to the late member, who had a great personal vote and was immensely popular. At the end of last year, when the United Party began organisation work in the Hawke’s Bay area, Mr Jull became treasurer of the Waipukurau branch of the party and chairman of the division, which included all electorates from Tauranga to the Wellington city seats. He was one of the gentlemen invited by Sir Joseph Ward to Wellington last February to discuss matters of organisation and the future cf the party. Though he has been in New Zealand for 52 years, Mr Jull is a Canadian, having arrived in Hawke’s Bay at the age of 13
